Wait.... I thought it was the cartridges that have drugs in them?

Beer has changed so much in 5 years. What were the 4 packs back then - $20?
Speaking of how things used to be, when was the last time any of you guys thought about Kate the Great? When was the last time anyone really cared about a non-barrel aged, non-pastry RIS?
I still drink old bottles of Expedition Stout on the reg. One of the only things I really "cellared", and I'm down to a 6-pack or so of 2013 and 2014 bottles. That's basically the last beer I have left of my "OMG I need to cellar all kinds of 4 and 6 packs of stuff!" phase, along with a few random BCBS bottles. At this point I only "cellar" lambic, mead, and HF saisons. Everything else I have of various ages is just random **** that gets opened whenever.
As far as Kate The Great goes, I had a vintage back in 2014 (I think a 2010 or 2011?) and it was already fairly oxidized and unimpressive, and since that experience I've never really thought about it much. Mott the Lesser was decent for what it was (but that just means "it was a pretty good non-BA imperial stout").
It was last released 6 years ago, I think its peak was well before that. The BA article that made it famous was released in 2007.That's sort of what I was saying about KtG - it was all the rage/extremely sought after 5 or 6 years ago (and it was pretty damn good for what it was).

Had someone send me a random Sexual Chocolate recently that was surprisingly awesome.
Remember when Sexual Chocolate was hot ****?

My birthday tasting from 2010 we had the following vertical
Sexual Chocolate 08
Sexual Chocolate 09
Sexual Chocolate 10 (bottle #1)
Barrel Aged Sexual Chocolate
Olde Rabbits Foot 2010
The dude who brought these bottles (Stoutfest for the old school Chicago / Midwest folks) acted like he had nuclear secrets / the great American novel in his cooler before he opened them up.
Simpler times.
I paid $20 for 4 pack of kbs a couple weeks ago. Retailers will mark it up to the price that they believe their customers will pay. Its business.Beer has changed so much in 5 years. What were the 4 packs back then - $20?

I traded pretty hard for the BA version a few years back. Zero regrets, that beer was really tasty.Had someone send me a random Sexual Chocolate recently that was surprisingly awesome.

What market has a chicken at $6/lbs?I paid $20 for 4 pack of kbs a couple weeks ago. Retailers will mark it up to the price that they believe their customers will pay. Its business.
I'm not going to sell a chicken for $6/lbs when the market will pay $8.
The fact that these beers are sitting on shelves collecting dust at a highly inflated price point will show the retailers that the customer won't pay that price. Its hot, it's new (ro the market), etc, etc. That has no bearing 2 weeks after release.
You live in the Bay Area. I can guarantee you there are many markets that have chicken for $6 a pound. What market has a chicken at $6/lbs?
**** that nonsense.

I have a bottle of the most recent KtG in my fridge actually. I think about it nearly every day.

I think you're largely missing everyone else's point which is that of course no one's talking about Kate any more because it hasn't been made in forever. If Mott had stayed at Portsmouth and still did KtG day every year there'd probably be some hype for it, although maybe not the same new money ******** that pervades everything else. Like, when was the last time you saw people going crazy over Younger? But the release is still a shitshow...Obv. The first batches are always better lol.
I just remember I was very excited to receive a bottle in 2011(?). I don't think there's a single brewery that could achieve that level of hype over a plain old RIS these days (maybe HF?).
Not saying it's good or bad (I'm actually not sure exactly what I'm saying other than remarking how the game as changed).

Also, your original comment was funny to me because I was just talking about Kate the other day. I really liked it, I wish it was still made, would be interesting to see how it's held up.
Seeing posts like these brings a tear to my eye. A great majority of the beers I still have cellared that are not Fantome or lambic fall into this category of forgotten “legendary beers” of yesteryear.
Every time I go into my cellar I find something I forgot I even had and wonder why the hell I even still have it.
2010/2011 KtG was amongst these finds just a couple weeks ago and literally noone I drink beer with these days even heard of Portsmouth Brewery, Southampton, Hair of the Dog, Midnight Sun, Kuhnhenn, Flossmoor, etc....
The insanity around Hair of the Dog dock releases five or six years ago was always fun to read about, but now they're nonexistent. I remember people losing their mind over Kuhnhenn beers (I went to a bottle share once and the dudes I was with wouldn't stop gushing about all these old ales and barleywines we were gonna drink from them) but I can't remember the last time I've seen anyone talk about them.
