Did anyone see Jim Gaffigan make a joke about beer and Tawd got upset?
More info on that.

I wish I could say I'm surprised nerds and the BA were upset about this, but I'm not. Also, the only reason most new beers I try are decent is because of years of learning things to avoid like "proudly brewed in Arizona"...honestly, I probably only drink from 15-20 breweries. He's obv not correct that all craft beers are bad, but hooboy a pretty high percentage of them are.

Paste Magazine staff writer Jim Vorel, who heads up that site’s beer coverage, penned a lengthy rebuttal to Gaffigan entitled: “Jim Gaffigan’s Anti-Craft Beer Op-Ed Is Equal Parts Pointless and Short-Sighted.”
Jim Vorel must lead a sad, lonely life.

Ska Brewing stops Texas distribution....

... ... ... ... ...

I haven't seen their beers on shelves or in a tap for AT LEAST 4 years. LOL.

It's always interesting when breweries choose to actually announce that they're leaving a market, since I can think of a ton of breweries that stopped sending beer to West MI (if not all of MI) long ago and never announced it, and in some cases misled store owners into think they would send new product in the future. The last major brewery to exit MI that I can recall bothering to announce was Allagash, and that was back in 2009 or 2010.

With some of the more.... prolific mule jobs that seem to be happening these days, esp. as people are starting to charge for mule fees... crossing state lines, etc.... have people gotten into legal trouble yet? Seems like just a matter of time.

For instance, if you're a Texas resident, if you go out of the state and come back in (mainly written this way for Mexico, but also seems applicable to.. say... Louisiana) you're only permitted

So say I went to Parish, picked up 30 cases of DDH Ghost this weekend and got pulled over on my way home... seems like a perilous bind to find myself in.

Anyone heard stories like this actually being prosecuted?

When I lived in Utah and the family lived in California, I would regularly make trips home for a few days and bring back several cases of good beer.

I was talking to a highway patrol officer one night at a bar and he told me that they regularly stop vehicles coming from the south with out of state plates and search vehicles they suspected of smuggling "high point" beer into the state.

I didnt stop bringing beer back, but I was much more discreet about it in my truck. It got put in the bed under my cover and not in my back seat.

They were still on shelves in DFW although it's probably been a few years since I saw them on tap. Maybe their IPA at Gingerman or Flying Saucer. I bet they had more distribution in west and northwest Texas where there was much less competition and they had a more entrenched market share.

We started getting Ska a couple years ago maybe, it's around, I don't think anyone buys much of it. I bought a few bottles of the Ska Face BA barleywine though. Solid pour.

But in general I just don't really buy nationally distributed stuff anymore. Locals and a handful of breweries from neighboring states (Central Waters/Drekker/TG/Brewing Projekt) keep me pretty satisfied.

That reminds me. I was in a beer store the other day and as I walked up and down the aisles, which were marked off with where the beer was from, I got to thinking; there is too much beer.

Sure, it's good to have plenty of breweries supplying your local area but do we need all these breweries sending their packaged beer to other markets? I feel like I can't trust the beer from multiple states away because it's probably been there for a while and looked over many times.

Not to mention one hipster 4 pack of IPA cans next to the other just gets boring after a while.

This is better than any bring on the beer e-mail I've received. BRB, gonna go make some Four Loko Red Manhattans.

I believe DFH still makes D'Etre but it only shows up at their brewpub or maybe even at the brewery.

When D'Extra came out in 2014 it shelf-turded it up at places like Wegman's. Everytime I would go in I would buy a bottle. It was usually $10 a pop so that's likely why it sat there. Then I found a place in NJ in 2015 that still had it sitting around a year later for $8 each. I'm pretty sure I bought all they had left. I still break one out on occasion.

I thought D'Extra was going to be a "once every two years" release that would switch off with Olde School but it hasn't been bottled since 2014.

And to think, I'm pretty sure D'Etre was DFH's biggest seller many moons ago.

They know how to brew, they have a few very well made strong ales and their IPAs, when fresh, are solid. Too many gimmicks though.

I remember Sam saying something about not wanting to become "The 60 Minute IPA Company" which in hindsight is kind of how New Belgium became "The Fat Tire Brewery". I agree Dogfish while I enjoy a lot of their beers Dogfish is a little too gimmicky. And they don't hold on to their styles very long. Thinking about D'Etre had me looking on their website in their "rarities" section and there are tons of great beers there that they don't make anymore (at least not in bottles that is).

And maybe that's because they sold a lot of them in 750ml bottles that didn't move. But it is kind of amazing that they still make Midas Touch, Palo Santo Marron and Burton Baton year round.

It's illegal to search a vehicle without probable cause or consent of the vehicle's owner. A cop can look in the windows though and see something that can give him PC to search the vehicle. So yeah, hiding your boxes or putting a blanket over them or something is likely sufficient. That said, because a car is mobile, an officer does not need a warrant to search. Just PC. So if they have PC for any other reason (say, canine unit barks, or perhaps they smell an illegal substance, etc.) they can search.

So basically they can just lie about smelling drugs and search your car regardless.

Now I ain't trying to see no highway chase with Jake
Plus I got a few dollars I could fight the case
So I, pull over to the side of the road
I heard "Son, do you know why I'm stopping you for?"
Cause I'm young and I'm black and my hat's real low
Or do I look like a mind reader, sir? I don't know
Am I under arrest or should I guess some mo?
"Well you was doing fifty-five in the fifty-four", uh huh
"License and registration and step out of the car
"Are you carrying a weapon on you, I know a lot of you are"
I ain't stepping out of ****, all my papers legit
"Well do you mind if I look around the car a little bit?"
Well my glove compartment is locked, so is the trunk and the back
And I know my rights so you goin' need a warrant for that
"Aren't you sharp as a tack? You some type of lawyer or something?
"Somebody important or something?"
Child, I ain't passed the bar, but I know a little bit
Enough that you won't illegally search my ****
"Well we'll see how smart you are when the K-9 come"

I know this. But I never considered that it could be a crime for bringing in beer from another state for personal consumption, so i always had the cases in Plainview in the rest seats. you'd only have to look in the window and see probable cause.

That right there is a reason not to move to pennsylvania.

Are you just discovering how American law enforcement works?

During the 2ish years that Bells stopped distributing in Illinois- their biggest market at the time!- because Larry Bell was pissed at his distributor, I was running cases of Two Hearted from Wisconsin for people whenever I was up there.

So, I’m not a lawyer (okay, I’m an environmental lawyer), but this is pretty flimsy advice. While it isn’t untrue, there are plenty of places where PC could be the fact that there are clearly hidden things in plain sight. TBH, who is to say those are cases of beer and not kilos of coke? Obviously reductive, but PC is a slippery ******* slope.

There is a longer version of this story that I'm too lazy to type out, but

Right after I took the Bar, I took a road trip around the country. It was right while Ferguson was going on. I was driving just outside Ferguson in a pack of cars at the speed of traffic and at the speed limit. I was pulled over for no reason (they said they smelled weed, I had no weed) and subjected to an unlawful vehicle search.

After finding nothing in my car, and just as they were ready to send me on my way (with no ticket), the cop says to me "So you're sure you don't have any contraband in your car?" I replied "No, and I wouldn't tell you if I did."

No need to head back to Missouri anytime soon.

Funny thing is, I did have 5 cases of beer in my car that I had driven all the way from California. They didn't bat an eye at that.
