Ok, even by 2017 standards, I am dumbfounded. My hometown area is renowned for "Herkimer Diamonds" which are actually quartz crystals but surprisingly pretty valuable in the gem world. A brewery down there has decided to, yep you guessed it, make a ************* IPA with diamonds in the mash, whirlpool then filtered through them. I literally can't even, for the life of me, figure out why they don't just go and kill themselves.

This post reminded me of something i saw on a local beer group on FB. This dude was wondering if a brewery had ever done a NE Style IPA brewed with quote " a crapload of EKGs and maybe either Styrian Goldings or Fuggles", ie british hops, and also put it out there that it should be experimented. I asked how in the hell that would still classify as a NE style IPA, I told him it would then become a british pale ale (a ******* awful one to say the least) and noted that english ale yeast is commonly used in NE style IPAs. Some other guy chimes in and basically calls me a BJCP style nazi and thinks it would be a great idea, then chimes in on how hes gonna make a NE style IPA with westcoast hops, and a midwest NE IPA brewed with midwest pale ale hops. I just couldn't respond, you can't argue with these kind of people.

You do sound like a BJCP Nazi. I bet you don't even consider a quadruple IPA a legitimate style...

I had a similar experience the other day, when someone at the local brewery asked me "what's the hop that's in New England IPAs?", which confused me considerably. At some point in the conversation I had to explain to several people that

-there are lots of "NE IPAs" that do not use mosaic hops
-there are lots of beers that use mosaic hops that are not NE IPAs

Also I made it a point to note that the over-focus on "juicy" hops is (to me at least) more associated with breweries copying the style and that a lot of the best IPA producers in New England make very good IPAs using hops such as centennial, chinook, simcoe, columbus, cascade, etc. HF Dharma Bum and TH Sap are two of my favorite IPAs from the last year.

I think your example is worse though, because what the **** are "west coast hops" and "midwest pale ale hops"?

My 2017 year in beer review....

I tried about 400 new brews. An alarming majority of them I outright disliked. Voodoo manbearpig was the best, Bruery Yount was the worst.

I did not care for most (if not all of) the haze craze/NE style ipas I tried. By default, I automatically hate and will not patronize any brewery who does attention whoring ala brewing beer with ridiculous things such as hamburgers, chickens, anal beads, etc.

I drank a metric **** ton of Fantome and came to the realization that I could live a perfectly content life drinking nothing but Fantome on the reg with a sidecar of Voodoo stouts and a random berliner/lambic/fresh ipa from time to time just to mix things up.

2018 will be the year I finally get my cellar to a manageable state.

sooooo

what was the beer/price?

A 60 dollar new Belgium sour. Because it has some rare coffee beans called geisha in it. Sign me right the **** up.

It's also a nitro beer and comes in a box. Nitro coffee sour for $60... elite beer connoisseurs only please!

Are the anal beads used in this scenario?

I bet Jeppe could brew 50 barrels with his stash

"Evil Twin: Even More Anus"

Dats it mane. 2017 was mostly Two Hearted with random saisons and sours sprinkled in.

Bellefonte Brewing: "No brewery can possibly create more bad publicity for themselves on social media this week than us."

Scofflaw Brewing: "Hold our beer."

Dystopian State Brewing: "LEEEEEEEEEERRROOOOOY JEEEEEENNNNNNKINS!"

Just gonna leave this here...
Tacoma's Dystopian State Brewing takes criticism well...

All they had to do was apologize, contact the customer privately and shut up. But nope! They didn't just double down. They quintupled down.

That is so amazing. Remarkable how many people drop their life's savings into entering a creative field (brewing qualifies, given the review culture) and have ABSOLUTELY no idea how to respond to negative criticism (don't, but think about whether it has merit, and loop in your CS team).

This is what happens when ******* homebrewers with no interpersonal skills get the "itch" to start their own brewery.
