I saw a checkin the other day on untappd where a guy gave 1 star to a gose with the caption "I don't like sour beers"

Dumb ****, then why are you drinking one and then proceeding to be an ******* and give the beer a low rating?
Haha I do this all the time with mead ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I use untappd for my personal record, don't give a **** about the average ratings or anything else.

IMAG1275.jpg

Oberon, Amber, L'appel du Vide Saskatoon, Le Pianiste, Smitten, Oatmeal Stout, Sweet Potato Stout, The Wild One, Two Hearted, Tawny Port Barrel Aged Porter, Imperial Red, Sherry Barrel Aged Bull in a China Shop.

Then dont give it a rating...?
How is it a personal record then? Maybe he likes some mead and not others. I've never understood why anyone cares about untappd ratings, they're obviously personal and stupid, the only reason they aggregate and display averages is that people wouldn't stop asking for it, the information is nearly useless.

Yep, agreed. While I generally dislike meads and barleywines there are a few in particular that I enjoy so I just like to keep track of everything.

Seeing how he admittedly dislikes meads and most BW's, then if he comes across one that he does like, he could then rate it, therefore standing out among his own rankings. Or possibly use the comment section to make notes.

Or a small notebook that you keep in your pocket and make notes of particularly outstanding meads and BW...hell, you'll probably only need a half a sheet of paper.

Maybe a slide rule to calculate his personal average then?

But why? To not hurt the feelings of sensitive brewers who troll Untappd looking for bad ratings on their beers?

I like using Untappd (****, I'm practically addicted to it) but I don't regard the ratings on there as anything more than a quick informal evaluation of the beers I'm drinking. The fact that the average rating over all beers is something like a 4.05 (or at least used to be in that range) immediately tells me that it's a pretty worthless rating database from a statistical perspective. If people were more willing to use the lower half of the scale then ratings there would have more value (and I'm just as bad an offender from this perspective as others). Untapped is basically a 20-point scale that's centered at just over 16 - that's dumb.

Exactly why I use untappd. Good personal log. I do like to rate beers. I think the rating system does a good job of giving the user a heads up as to whether or not that beer is going to be ****** or not. Just the other day, i picked up a random fruited lambic I've never had before. Lo and behold the rating on untappd was around a 3, and the beer tasted like ****** fruit juice, not that good. So i think the rating system does have a bit of fair play involved. Yeah, your're going to get the shitlords like the cycle or voodoo fanboys for example, who all give their adjunct BA stout a 5 star rating and jerk off to the beer, but that's the outlier.
I just think it's stupid to rate a beer low soley on the user's liking of a flavor profile (ie, not liking sour beers).

Idk, i'm just ranting. I know this belongs on the untappd thread. Whatever

Get off my lawn!

I've been surprised by styles I don't like before so instead of rating by style I use it to rate if I enjoyed a beer or not. I'm usually generous with ratings too, those fruited Lindemans are terrible for the style IMO but I kinda enjoy them every once in a while for example.

Do you think you're representative of craft beer consumers/untappd users? Hint: you aren't.

Then the "craft beer consumers/untappd users" are wrong. The overall ratings are absolutely 100% a joke.

Rating beers is useful but not for the overall ratings. I like seeing what my friends and people whose palates I trust think of hot new beers or whaley things to determine if I should seek it out.

I was commenting more on the notion of rating a beer in the style that you personally do not like.

Sorry to derail this thread into an untappd pissing contest.

Side note, i put a heavily hopped 13% ABV double IPA in the back of my fridge about a year and half ago to leave it in there and see if it gracefully turns into a tasty barleywine.
I took it out yesterday to see if it transformed into something tasty.

It did not. I am dissapoint.

I feel ya dude. I wasn't trying to tell you what to do, or not do. We are all lucky to have things like Untappd for tracking our personal consumption and preferences. The ease of use is amazing. A picture, where we had it, how we enjoyed it, even some tasting notes. It's pretty fantastic. Especially for trading partners to be able to scan our check ins.

That's exactly it. If I know someone does not like IPA's and rate a beer low, then I'm not taking his personal rating into account. So yes, overall ratings are useless on Untapped. But, if you can read through a block of reviews, and determine if the reviewers are actually evaluating these beers with any sort of discerning conscience, then yes, they will be considered for my personal directive towards the beer.

Like when powz87 tells me he wouldn't bang lurchingbeast...I mean, I know he doesn't like long hairs so ZFG.

Right, that's literally my point. It's there on Untappd so people are using it regardless if its appropriate or meaningful. I've overheard people talking averaged ratings at our bar quite a few times.

I guess I thought you were getting at something else when you dropped the snarky reply towards someone you agreed with.

Back to random beer thoughts:

Saw a pic somewhere else of some guys doing a barrel aged maple syrup tasting. I'm talking 8 different bottles served in tasting glasses (including HF and Voodoo syrup in their respective #properglassware). Has craft beer gone too far?

Ah, got it now. Yep, completely agree with you there.

I got back and forth on the value of these various rating sites (BA, RB, Untappd, etc.) using Bayesian weighted means for beer scores. Or in some cases (I think Untappd does this), showing the weighted mean in one location and the unweighted one in another.

I can certainly appreciate the rationale for doing so: a beer shouldn't immediately skyrocket to the top of rankings lists etc. based on a small number of reviews, many of which may be locals/homers/hypers/bots/etc. But when the overall average is so high (as it is on Untappd), instead what you have is tons beers being dragged -up- rather than down.

Maybe the simple solution is to take Min{unweighted, weighted} and use that as the rating.
