Thanks for digging that up. So this still doesn't explain why on the Box for Rare it says barrels filled in 1985 in Bardstown, KY and emptied in 2008 in Bardstown, KY. Someone screwed up the label if these were really PVW23. In fact, even if they were SW barrels acquired by Heaven Hill, the label is still wrong because they would not have been filled in Bardstown, only emptied there.

I think a disconnect between the marketing / label folks with the actual information is much more likely than Gregg Hall / Tom Griffin being wrong about what barrels they were sourcing.

However anything is possible.

At this point, think you are right. Most of their BCBS barrels would have been filled and emptied in Bardstown, and the marketing folks made a mistake. However, that does seem like a glaring error which no-one caught. Possibly no-one at Goose really knew enough to catch it.

And in the end, a 23 year SW barrel that was used for PVW23, or blended into EW23 would make no difference in the final product of 2010 Rare.

You started to get drunk before the last two glasses.

Your description reminds me of the growler of Pacer from Tree House that I had. Tasted like bad homebrew.
I thought maybe it was an air thing. First glass was Wednesday night, the the rest was Thursday. I swirled it a bit. I do this.

I want to start a beer club with some friends and was wondering how other beer clubs operate. Any suggestions on how to structure a club? Go buy 6 packs and split them?
I have access to Stone Best Before 6 packs. Can I be in your group?

Lastly, someone on my untappd used the term "lambic funk" for every decriptor of a geueze. Do I drill a hole in the review and make sweet, sweet love to it, or unfriend them? Not sure.

Adam Vavrick former beer manager at LP Binny's in Chicago had one of the barrels (it was never filled with rare, instead had the rare logo stenciled on it and was used as a display item at the release in 2010) and he says it was labeled Old Fitzgerald, with a date of 1982. 1982 is a few years earlier than the 1985 on the Rare box, but it is certainly possible that a few older barrels were blended in with a 23 year product.

Part of that is false. The barrel was indeed filled with Rare, it was the only Rare barrel that wasn't refilled with the Barleywine that became King Henry. When they dropped it off to me it was a godawful mess of the most delicious sludge you could possibly imagine. There might be pics of it leaking everywhere on my Twitter if anyone wants to dig through it. I ended up filling it with water and rolling it around the parking lot to clean it out because this is how you get ants, Lana.

You can look at the barrel yourself if you're in Chicago, as far as i know it's still sitting in the corner of the beer cave at Binny's LP.

Went to a sour beer fest in Minneapolis today (WTWBA) and talked to the 6th generation brewer of Schells for like a half hour. Great talking to him about all the different beers they brew. He also brought a special keg of an apricot berliner weiss, which will be released in December (same series as Starkeller Peach and Star of the North). It was phenomenal and full of apricot flavor.

3rd annual homebrew competition Brixtoberfest went off without a problem yesterday, and was amazed how great the dark lager and bock categories I judged were overall. A group of styles severely underrepresented in craft beer, but I'd love to see places like Metropolitan / Jacks Abby continue to explore them.
