quick question/cider/gravity reading

I just setup a 1 gallon jug of cider. I already pitched the yeast but I didn't take an OG reading. Should I just sanitize the hydrometer and check it real quick from the 1 gallon growler?

You could, but there's really no reason to know the OG.

Sure. What's the worst that could happen? At least you'll have a ball park reading even if it isn't totally accurate (which it could be).

I sanitized a turkey baster and pulled some out. I didn't feel comfortable dropping the hydrometer into the jug. I probably would not have been able to get it back out.

This reading should help me determine alcohol when it's all said and done, right?
