following the thread above, i was thinking about tryin it without a stopper. has anyone had success with this? i tried this before and couldnt get the stopper to burp correctly which ended up with excess pressure filling and a foamy mess. i didnt turn off the gas and bleed the pressure as well. is this necessary? i guess i have a fear of turning off gas and bleeding my keg would result in future flat beer or off flavors. also, i have a bottle wand lying around, is this better used vs. piece of racking cane?

You need to turn down the gas and bleed the keg or you make a mess for sure. Your keg will not go flat. A Growler doesn't go instantly flat when you open it. No worries.

I don't like to turn my regulator down so this is what I do. I don't bleed my keg all the way. I turn off the gas and then pull the relief valve incrimentally until I get to about 5psi. I then fill my bottles and add more CO2 as needed. The rubber stopper is necessary. I took my bottling wand and cut the top at an angle with my angle grinder, smoothing with a small file. I can still use it with the bottle filling tip or I can use it to keg-bottle.
