What the hell is gelatin used for?
If used correctly, very clear beersWhat the hell is gelatin used for?
What the hell is gelatin used for?
It's true, this is a question about using gelatin!
I'm going to use some in a blonde tonight that's getting kegged tomorrow or Friday.
I love that everyone agrees that gelatin works wonders for producing brilliant beer, but no one ever agrees on a method of use.
Mine: boil and cool water, sprinkle gelatin (not much, about 1 tablespoon or a Knox packet), allow to bloom then bring back up to around 130ishºF. pour into freshly sanitized keg and rack beer on top after purging with CO2 like a maniac. Roll it around while carbing to speed up the carbing and to mix the gelatin thoroughly. Wait a few days for stuff to settle and pour off a pint of gunk before enjoying a crystal clear keg.
Works like a charm.
A fun little experiment is to take one of your bottled beers that's not quite clear yet, pour in a teaspoon of this solution, recap and refrigerate it. Overnight you'll have a nice layer of snot on the bottom of the bottle. That was the little test I did that made me decide I'd never not use gelatin.
