question about carboys

I found a five gallon carboy in my mother's basement! All she was using it for was a container for loose change, so she said I could have it. I am unfamiliar with using carboys. Are there different size openings? Will a standard carboy cap fit on it or do I need to measure it and try to find a specific size for it?

I think I am going to use it for a batch of EdWort's Apfelwein.

Different carboys have different size openings...most standard 5 gal carboys require a size 7 (my preference) bung.

the cap is pretty universal with those glass carboys...

make sure to clean it real well, and to inspect for any small cracks before you use it..

Is it glass or plastic?

6 and 5 gal carboys take the same size cap, 6.5 is actually smaller for some reason.

Its glass. Aside from it being really dusty theres no cracks, just some small scratches on the bottom. As for the change, I got to keep it. I'll put it into my beer ingredient fund :rockin: Thanks for the help guys.

How was she planning on Lifting the carboy once filled with change? That would NOT be something I'd want to carry, especially Up stairs!
But I would also chek for any cracks do to dropping change into it.

Yeah I got a 5 gal. carboy from my dad that he used for change. Gotta love it.

I got my first carboy from my grandmother. She had dried flowers in it. When I finally cleaned it out for beer making, I noticed a year stamped in the bottom. 1923! A pre-prohibition carboy
