I'm going to make a Blue Moon Knock off from Austin. The instructions have me using two gallons of water to start brewing and adding another gallon later. I have been just ben using a gallon to a gallon and a half in my first two batches figuring it all gets added together to make five gallons in the end. Is this a mistake? Does it really matter? Any advice?

I started boiling 1.5G in the beginning. But now start the boil with2.75-3G,trying to account for my slow stove steaming away part of it. Since I use DME & LME's,I use half the 3lb bag of DME in the boil for hop additions. I save the remaining DME/LME dor a late addition. Works real well for lighter color,& better flavor.
