Hey HBT, I've got a number of weldless bulkheads (homemade) that I've been using with a silicon o-ring on either side of the kettles. While putting together a SS Brewtech kettle that uses a ptfe washer on the inside of the kettle and a silicone o-ring on the exterior of the kettle I noticed that the ball valve had far less movement than with 2 o-rings. I'm looking at getting some ptfe washers to use on my other bulkheads to firm the connection up.
My current "bulkheads" are a 1/2" stainless steel close nipples with a silicone o-ring on either side along with a stainless steel locking nut w/o-ring groove behind them.
Any issues that you guys can think of with these? SS Brewtech uses them and brewershardware.com sells them for tri-clover connections so I'm thinking that they are ok. I'm looking at getting them from TheORingStore.com as the SS Brewtech ones are a little small on the ID.
