Is this generally accepted at your place of work? There is the definite smell of boiling wort......

There's a definite smell when people cook fish in the microwave too, but that doesn't seem to stop some of the folks in my office. Boiling wort on the other hand, smells goooooooooood.

This is true!! I've smelled some BAAAD stuff in the lunchroom.
I once put my ramen noodle cup in the microwave and heated for 3 minutes......Oh sh**, I forgot to add water! That smells bad!!!

How about using a French Press to do mashes? Seems like a natural fit. And if you're worried about maintaining temps you could just wrap one of those drink cozy things around it.

You know they sell gatorade powder in containers that look like an orange home depot water cooler.

You could drill a hole and put in a small ball valve with stainless steel braid.

Then you only need to heat water in the microwave to the desired temp. Would be easy to insulate the outside of the container but If you just put the thing in your car, the inside of your car has to be about 120 degrees. I bet it would hold well with out insulation but inside of your car with the sun shinning on it.

I used to have one of those! It made a great water mug (low refill rate) until it started to leak around the seam with the lid.

I've already thought of this. On brewday, bring in a gallon of vinegar. Put a sign on the coffee pot, and say "cleaning coffee pot, sorry for the smell". Go ahead and put one or two cycles of vinegar through the coffee pot while brewing somewhere else. The vinegar should overpower any other smells.

Of course I proposed it as a way of getting started with low cost, not for doing it at work. I even came up with a basic recipe:

2 oz two-row
1oz crystal 80L

0.25 oz saaz 3.5 AA 5 min boil
This should be 4.5 ABV and 21 IBUs.


The trick is to keep you beer from being overly hopped. You can either use a really small amount of hops or you can do a really short boil. My recipe used a really short boil, but I don't know if this will really work, since your still getting a lot of hop flavor, just not as much bitterness. I wonder if the flavor / aroma will be unbalanced. However, any amount smaller than 1/4 oz you'll need an accurate hop scale, guessing wont work.

+1 for the french press MLT. If you have a few extra bucks you can even get a thermal one (Espresso Zone - Frieling Stainless Steel Thermal French Press) and an electric tea pot for your HLT. We did some ghetto hooch in Iraq and all we used was ballons with a pin hole in it for fermenting. This sounds very interesting.....I may have to try it here.....hmmmm......

god, there's a post from greenwood rover in here......I think that's the first one I've come across since he passed away.
