Toying a little more with the idea...
22oz single bottle Mild
6oz Maris Otter
.25oz Chocolate
.1oz Challenger 7.5%
mash at 154 in thermos until complete (30min assumed) with 30oz water
then strain through a coffee filter into a tupperware container
Add hops then set the microwave on high for 15 min
After boil strain through coffee filter again and place into sanatized (via dishwasher cycle) thermos, pitch an eyedropper of yeast slurry, then cover with foil. After 1 week prime with one packet sugar and bottle and cap with wing capper.

I don't know how to tackle clarity issues as I assume this will be pretty cloudy...
I also generically picked a week to ferm because I wouldn;t want to waste any of it on gravity samples. I don't have a refractometer so 2 samples would be about the entire batch size...

5) DMS

There are good reasons for a 60-90 min boil with both extract and all-grain, I think there are more good reasons for all-grain though since DME has already been boiled.

Crock pot is a good idea for a small batch boiler. You could also put a temp controller on it for mashing, so it does double duty. You could do BIAB with the crock pot....

Thanks Rob, for giving me something to occupy my mind.

I like the concept and you are taking it to the extreme. You got me thinking about small scale AG brewing though. I was thinking more along the lines of say a 1Gallon brewery. Once of those stainless coffee urns with the valve in the front and including a temp controller should be able to serve the function of a mash tun and boil kettle with the BIAB method. Imagine a small AG brewery that you could use on the kitchen counter if you got the urge to brew on a weekday but had limited time.

Understand that there is still a minimum amount of time for mashing and boiling, but you could cut down on time for racking, cooling, etc...

Sorry for the semi-hijack. I was inspired and might try this someday if I can pick up one of those pots at a yard sale.

i use one of those coffee urns (100cup/4g) for a hlt and your gonna be hard pressed to get it to a boil without hacking the hell out of it, mine only hits 190 before it locks into warming mode.

i picked up a 2g igloo round for a mini mashtun this week since i do make 1.5g test batches (2g fermenter)

I was wondering if they would boil or not. Maybe with an upgraded element.

Definitely a project for the future, but I think it would be cool to build a homebrew pilot brewery with say a 2.5-3G capacity on a roll-away cart, mostly just to say I could.

rolling tool cart
60 cup coffee urn hlt(2.8g)
3g mt (maybe a small cube cooler?)
camping 1# propane cooker and 20qt pot

should do for a quick and dirty setup for 3g batches

I was actually thinking something more along the lines of 3 coffee pots, small pump, each with an individual temperature controller. Kind of like a small electric version of a Sabco brewery.

Some Walgreens brewing equipment all under $10

Rice cooker.
Advantages: Will definitely boil. I would re-use this to make rice. COMES WITH MASH PADDLE!!!!
Disadvantages: On and off only. No temp control. Timer on rice cooker.

Hot Pot
Advantages: Label says it will boil, Temp Control.
Disadvantages: I don't make tea.

I'd be temped to go DME with steeping grains. Also I think boiling in the microwave or an hour would be a problem, DME would help since you only need to boil for hop utilization. I'd reccommend a IPA, all bittering/flavor/aroma in the 10 minute boil.

Use one of those electric teapots. I dunno how much juice it'll zap in an hour but I know it'll go that long. I've use one as a humdifier in my office before.

Assuming that the rice cooker will be your mash tun and the tea urn will be your boil kettle... Do you have a method of lautering, would a simple "gold coffee filter" work for you?

I think I can get away with just the teapot and a thermos. Thermos would be the HLT.

A lidded tupperware for the tun.
Coffee filter to filter the runnings.

The best MT would be an insulated coffee maker carafe. Mine keeps coffee hot for hours. A little pricier than the thermos tho.

You could have the Rice Cooker hooked into a Ranco or other temp control device and have that be a "direct fired" MLT.

Is this generally accepted at your place of work? There is the definite smell of boiling wort......

No absolutely not. But it ain't beer until you pitch.

I will be eating maple flavored oatmeal that morning. maybe even some cooked grains. The volume would be very small. See Greenwood Rover's recipe.

I don't think a wing capper is necessary. There shouldn't be any ill effects bottle conditioning in a 20oz PET soda bottle. If you choose pepsi/coke then it probably wouldn't look too out of place since the recipe is for a darker brew.

edit: Maybe a Nestea bottle would work too

+1 on the nestea bottle you could ferment in there by covering it with foil then bottle by racking (gently pouring) into another pre-primed bottle
BONUS: If you chew or dip and have a nasty habit of leaving your spit bottles/cups around you know that no-one will be coming within 10ft of it...

Also, rice cookers don't have timers, they have temperature sensors. When the temperature inside has risen enough above boiling that the cooker can be sure the water has all been absorbed/boiled off, it switches from cooking mode to warming mode. So you could definitely boil in one.

As for the smell, I remember seeing a thread about someone's college-dorm no-smell brewing a while back... I think he fed the blowoff tube through a bottle of water + baking soda, and then had another tube going from there out a window, with a sock on the end to keep anything from crawling in.

You could run it over to someone else's cube !!!

I think the amount being fermented will be small enough that smell won't be an issue. Tubes going everywhere are sure to draw unwanted attention. Just be sure to use a yeast not known for producing off-smells during fermentation.

I don't know about you, but we have lockers in our cubes and a ton of empty offices in my building. It wouldn't be hard to mask something like that here.
