So I am brewing a blonde ale here tomorrow and was going off a recipe that called for

5.2 lbs extra pale dry extract
1.5 lbs German Pils Malt
1.5 German Munich
1.5 lbs Pale Crystal

Crystal and Saaz hops in the specified increments. Partial mash of grains for an hour with LME(replacing DME) being added into last 10 minutes of boil.

Wyeast 1272 ferm at 60 degrees F.

I was told that the equivalent of the 5.2 lbs of dry extract is roughly 6.5 lbs of LME. However, when I plug it into the brewers friend calculator I get a beer that is over 6% alcohol and the gravities are way off. I have done 8 batches with extract and grain before this and have never used this much grain. IF I half the LME to only 3lbs, I am much closer to an actual blonde ale and in the actual ABV range. So I am a bit confused here....can anyone help sort this out? This is my first post so thanks ahead of time and sorry for any noob questions! Will be going all grain soon :mug:

Well, you'll get quite a bit of gravity points from 4.5 pounds of grain, so I'm sure that's what's going on if you're not taking that into account. Using about 3 pounds of LME and using 4.5 pounds of grain in a partial mash sounds about right, but I didn't try it in Brewer's Friend. I'd set your efficiency at around 65% for a "partial mash" and use 3 pounds of LME and see what it predicts.
