So I'm bottling my first batch tonight, a pretty typical Brown Ale and I thought that maybe I could add a hint of maple flavor to it by priming with maple syrup. I have a half gallon of Grade B syrup from Vermont that I know we'll never use up, so I thought maybe I could use some to prime the beer for carbonation. I know Palmer suggests you can do this but I'm a little hesitant. Here are my questions:

Is priming a beer with maple syrup that wasn't brewed with any maple syrup going to lend any of that flavor or will it simply carbonate it?

Is it a good idea to prime with maple syrup in the first place?

If so, how much should I use for a 5 gallon batch and should I boil it first? I know if I boil it I'll lose some of the flavor but I also don't know how safe it is to simply pour a cup or two of maple syrup into a finished batch of beer.

Thanks for the help.

Generally I don't think you'll add a lot of maple flavor just by priming with it. I believe it is one of the flavors that is hard to get it to carry through to the final product. I don't think it is a bad idea to try. I'd probably siphon half into my bottling bucket, prime with sugar, then bottle... and do the same but with maple syrup.

has anyone tried this recently? is it worth giving it a try? is the head still white or somewhat maple colored? so a little more than 1/2 cup to carb 5 gallons?
