I've never tried priming with DME, but I've had some luck with the Cooper's carbonation drops. Nothing spectacular, but they work well for the few bottles that I draw off of a batch when i'm kegging it. I've never really found out how to sanitize them though, so I usually immerse them in iodophor and shake them off. Fancy, huh.

How does DME compare to corn sugar?

Corn sugar ferments more quickly, and more completely than DME (I think it is something like 90% vs. 70%, but don't quote me on that). So where as you wouldn't want to include a large quantity of corn sugar in your wort for flavor reasons, as far as priming goes (and the small quantities involved) corn sugar works pretty well. If you use DME, just be sure to leave a week or more time for the bottle conditioning to develop adequate carbonation.
