Priming a keg with DME?

I have read on other posts that some folks prime their kegs with DME. How is this done and why?

I have a Nierra Sevada on deck to keg with a week left in the secondary and was wondering if I should try priming the keg for this one. Thoughts appreciated.

The only reason would be if you didn't have the ability to force carb the beer with CO2, or if you were dispensing it with a beer engine and not CO2. Then priming is a way to get it carbonated before you put it on tap. It will, however, add some sediment to your beer.

For a 5-gal batch, the typical amount of DME is reduced from what you'd use in bottles..from 1.25c to 0.75c, I believe.

It will take a little longer to clear though.

Priming a keg is HALF of what you would normally prime a batch.

Some purists would say this is the only way to carbonate your kegged beer - especially if you are doing english bitters/ales.

I don't keg so I'm just saying...
