My first attemp at all grain, and according to the recepie my pre boil og is too low at 1.030. I was told it should be at 1.054. not sure what to do going forward.

pre-boil will be lower - boiling drives rapid evaporation, condensing the liquid.

boiling 6.5 gallons in a 10 gallon pot will often lose a gallon and a half... although the quick math says 1.5 gallon boil off for full boil batch will get you closer to 1.040

was that a refractometer-converted reading or a hydrometer?
did you adjust for temperature?

What temp was your sample? You'll have to correct for the high temp if it was still 150 deg f. Thats more than double what the hydrometer is calibrated for.

very true.

on a 60F hydrometer, 150F (near your mash temp) and 1.030 = 1.049
add in the boil-off volume, and you're closer to sitting at 1.064 at pitching time.

thanks to BeerSmith 2.0's boil-off tool and hydrometer tool

Thanks, i used a hydrometer and did not calculate for temperature. So according to the other replies i seem to be ok.
