So I read that long post about PM from a few years back. I lost track and got dizzy after page 22. My question is: Can I do a PM in a 10g gatorade type cooler or will there be too much heat lose due to extra space. The way I look at it, if I'm going to build a MLT and I see myself going to AG sooner rather than later I mine as well build something I can grow into. My set up now is banjo type burner, big pot (hope to put ball valve on and turn into HLT). So I figured if i could do PM with the 10g and over the next 6 months or so convert pot to HLT and acquire keggle or something it would make a nice progression. Look forward to your input. Thanks in advance.

Two tricks: pre-heat the cooler and use a 5:1 to 7:1 mash ratio (by weight). I do PM in a 48 qt IceCube.

It's been a long day so go easy but by 5:1 do you mean 5 qt for every lb of grain? Appreciate the help.

A pint's a pound. So, 2.5 quarts to 3.5 quarts per pound. Homebrewers tend to use very stiff mashes, which restricts enzyme movement.
