I am dying to get a plate chiller to avoid the icebath/immersion chiller combo I am currently using (I brew by myself a good bit and I am scared for my life every time I have to carry five gallons of 212 wort thought the yard alone). Quick question, how long does it take to run five gallons through 1/2" tubing on a plate chiller using a gravity feed? In other words, is a pump important for the best results or is a gravity feed good enough? Thanks for any help.

it's actually a balancing act. THe colder your chilling water is the faster you can run the wort through. If your chilling water is close to your target temperature you might be running at gravity feed speed anyway.

I run 5 gallons through my shirron and chill it to 68 in about 10 mins. It works great. I can't imagine ever using an immersion or ice bath again.

Ruffdeezy, I love that set-up. Do you brew close by and then put the pot on that unit to chill the wort? Is it on wheels? How tall is it?
