How have the last few markets been? If I show up like 30 minutes or so before opening, will I still be good, or do I need to bring my sleeping bag (and maybe some stuff for s'mores)?

I got there at 9:45 this past Sunday (10AM open) and my buddy and I were 29 and 30 in line. They dropped the limit from 3 bottles to 2 bottles as we stepped up to get ours. There were at least 30 people behind us, maybe more by the time we got bottles.

Bummer man. I was 37 and I felt so bad for whoever was the first person to get that bad news from Evan (aka you). Nothing worse than watching the person in front of you buy 3 bottles, then being told you can only buy 2.

For anyone else wondering, they usually look at how many people there are in line at opening and then place the limit. You're basically guaranteed bottle(s) if you get there before opening, unless it's a complete shitshow.

Until his expansion is done, usual bottle count is around 11-12 cases (132-144 bottles)

ummm.... yes please??

(hope this works)

Great release today. Got 3 sets, everything was laid back and relaxed. Had one of the best grilled cheeses, and those fries were to die for. Continued on to OEC to load up and then to Tree House for some TWSS cans and it was a good day!
how far was oec and tree house from plan bee?

The release was at Newburgh, so OEC's only about an hour or so down the highway. Maybe 75 minutes. Tree house is about an hour and half, but I needed to get a new hoodie before they are gone (and they don't ship clothing).

EDIT: If you're curious: https://goo.gl/maps/nAd99DpM3Mp

Went to the market today for the first time, great people was wonderful to meet them. Sampled the beer while there and it was delicious. Hope to be back up there soon.

Anybody have thoughts on the past few months of Hive membership? Got an e-mail today regarding an opening, which would start in January, and I'd like to decide ASAP.

I was one of the 40 original...and I'm not renewing. No interest in paying for beer ahead of time that I don't know what I'm getting...especially if it's something I won't like or drink. Too pricey for that.

I am so close to agreeing to you. I just like everything I got last time. $1040 is a bit much though to get 2 of each beer. They do make great stuff and have great service, except for my tasters. I do want to support my local brewery and have been happy so far, but can't wrap my head around the price tag.

$1040? Seems a little cheaper this time. Here's what I got:

BEE A PART OF THE HIVE

Thank you for your support! By becoming a Hive member, you will help us function through the Winter into the Spring when we hope to open up our farm and tasting room to the general public. This membership will serve as our primary distribution until then, making every bottle nearly exclusive to you!

What to expect in the next 6 months . . .

Our new brewhouse will be a stainless steel 10BBL steam-fired, local open oak fermented, coolship cooled, barrel aged sanctuary for wild, 100% NY ingredient farmhouse & sour beers tied directly to our farm & the Hudson Valley. Tart, but delicate, going forward on the farm we are de-signing beers with profound flavors & aromas that highlight the ingre-dients that we will painstakingly, grow, harvest, & process.

This 6 month membership with feature past brews like; KarnL, Royal Jelly, Bartlett, Narcissus, (a tart) Dandeliason, Tree Beer, Brass Tacks, along with many kettle soured, mixed and spontaneous fermented 100% NY sour ales. In the Spring, we are going to be starting a new series called "Bouquet" which will consist of a coolship cooled base beer (pollen-laden air next to our flower beds) that is mixed fermented in our open oak fermenters, transferred to the barrel room & individually "dry flow-ered" with one of our 12 flower varieties.

As Evan so lovingly puts it, “I'm a just a drone, you all know Emily is the Queen... But we are nothing without the hive. Thanks for all your support.”

I was adding up the $50 and the $990 upfront. I know that it's a little more than $13 a beer, but that is a lot up front.

If they remake pickle, it's very much worth it though. Goes great with a Reuben

Oh yeah. Duh. Sorry, I don't math very well.

Anyway, If I were to do it, I'd definitely go with the less expensive option, which ends up being $545 total. But I do appreciate that they allow you to pay monthly. It's still pricey, but not as pricey as it could be.

I enjoy the sours no doubt. Pickle was really interesting and I did enjoy it. Not a big fan of their hoppy offerings...but their sours are great.

I know I spent more that either Tier last year, but they gave me the upfront option on buying beer. There were weekly emails asking if I wanted the latest beers. I know logistically this is a nightmare, but I got used to it. I also like having a second to age, giveaway or trade. But f me that is a lot of money.

It's also great talking to Evan and Emily and seeing little Ellie Ann. Evan knows so much about beer and they are all just great people.

So of course I'm going to do it, and not tell my wife, but it's worth it to me

i'm not sure if i'm gonna renew, if i do it'll be with a couple friends. its a bit expensive this time around and i like to know what i'm getting! especially since Evan will be working out the kinks on a brand new system and they don't even have anything in barrels at the moment... i'm not ok with 6 table beers for the first few months.

Hm. Weird. I didn't get this email even though I was in the original Hive....

That said, I probably wouldn't renew even if I was given the option. The original arrangement was far more preferable as I could easily opt out of anything that just didn't sound that great to me. And it was nice not having to blindly throw down that much money without really understanding what you'd get.

I didn't buy nearly as much as what they're allotting you here and probably wouldn't even want that much Plan Bee stuff stashed away. Of all of the releases, maybe 4 or 5 of them were really worth it. The rest were like "ok, I guess I'll buy a couple of those"....kind of apathetically....and they really weren't that great in the end either.

As long as there's still an option to buy most of these publicly then I'm sure it won't really feel any sort of loss of not being in the Hive this time around. In the end, it was more a matter of convenience for me.

I'm probably in the minority as part of the original 40 hive members as well but I enjoyed it. I can only do Tier 1, but 6x6 = 36 (beer.math) for $50 + $495 = $545 still felt like a solid deal for me.
As long as there's still an option to buy most of these publicly
I agree with this too, if you're right there, unless there's member only ones than probably fine to just go to the releases (they're looking for a new place while Beacon isn't running to do bottle sales currently)

I agree on the blind money drop and not being told what we're getting, but I've enjoyed alot of the sours. I didn't see this quote from Evan posted yet, but here it is below.

"Our new 25 acre farm will be home to a host of seasonal fruit, flowers, herbs, grains, hives, & hops. Our brewhouse will be a 10BBL steam-fired, local open oak fermented, coolship cooled, barrel aged sanctuary for wild, farmhouse, & sour beers tied directly to our farm & the Hudson valley. Eventually it will be a warm & earnest destination to welcome the patrons/friends like you for a day of hiking, fruit picking, animal petting, fishing, picnicking, live music listening, & of course-imbibing.
My philosophy going forward as a beer maker, is simple and streamlined. Connected to sharp crisp, lightly acidic, complex flavors & aromas will highlight the ingredients that we will painstakingly, grow, harvest, & process. Fruit beer staples like Amour, KarnL, Savage, Precious, Bartlett will make the cut from the old brewery with even more future sour fruit beers in the future. An annual wild cider/sour (from our wild Apple trees) will be released in small bottles at the end of each year - including 2015. I can confidently say, the new era of plan bee will be of a much higher caliber than previous plan bee releases. Your enthusiasm & support have spawned an new era of NY farmhouse brewing through Plan Bee. I'm a just a drone, you all know Emily is the Queen... But we are nothing without the hive. Thanks for all your support.
Peace & Love,"

But again totally understand where people are coming from, and I respect it entirely (this is cashmoney we are talking about). I mean even in El Cat there were beers I was meh on, while some of the beers I just quickly traded/moved/gifted.

I'm probably just biased but I enjoyed it the Hive and more excited to see what Evan can do not out of a shed haha.
