It was nice finally putting a face to a poster here. Met moarhops down at Piper's this past Saturday. First time I've visited in a while but excellent food and beer selection as always. So cool seeing a beer like Mammoth on tap outside of Brew Gentlemen.

Also, why did Independent Brewing Company have to change their hours so that they don't open until 5:00 pm? Catching a flick at the Manor/Regent Square and then heading up for some afternoon beers was something that my wife and I really enjoyed. Come on IBC, make day drinking great again.
Good to see you too man! BG has been treating the Pub very well lately, should have Final Colossus on by the end of the week.

Big drop of Blanton's around Pittsburgh today. I (finally) scored a bottle off the shelf.

(Edit) Not technically off the shelf. My local FWGS had them where you had to ask for them. The guy said last time they put them out some dude bought every single one.

Love me some Blanton's - easily my favorite "shelf" bourbon

While I am on a lager rant, someone get Jack's Abbey in here. Post Shift Pils pounders are always bought en masse when I frequent the in-laws in Buffalo. That and Firestone Lager with the occasional Von Trappe score makes me a happy man.

Guess I've just stopped trying, because I couldn't care less if any of these breweries distributed to Pittsburgh. Sunshine, Prima, and Kaiser keep me happy just fine.

One of those guys is usually exactly what i end up with after i look at the SlyFox Helles or Pikeland Pils cans and see they're roughly the same age as my child.

On the topic of Lager talk the new Sierraveza and Brooklyn unfiltered pils are both great as well. Albeit not PA natives.

I've been keeping a steady supply of Urquell cans/bottles in my fridge the last month or so. GEMDWW had some 4 packs last time I was in. I just brewed up 17 gallons of a pils a couple of weeks ago. I haven't done many lagers but it tastes really nice right now with a spicy bite on the finish. I guess I have 5 more weeks to go? I plan on dry hopping one keg with whatever cones I have in the fridge or maybe some cascade hops a buddy harvested.

Gonna brew up some, probably very lager-ish, blonde ales this coming Spring. Sounds like a good idea.

Heck yeah. pils urquell has found its way into my fridge a lot the last few months too. If I’m out and see it on draft it’s prob gonna be my first choice. That spicy saaz gets me every time. I havnt brewed any lagers. My lack of dedicated temp control makes then intimidating. I have brewed a couple simple kolsch though the best of which had a touch of that saaz bite. May need to give that another go soon.
Also I just saw roundabout has that earl gray pale ale back on. Absolutely loved that beer last time I had it. Would love to see some cans of that.

I'm taking advantage of my uninsulated garage/brewing space and my heating temp control to manage the lagering phase. I have a buddy that kegs his czech pils after 2 weeks, lagers in his keezer, and adds gelatin to the keg. The first pours are goo but then it's smooth sailing. I thought it was really well done and tasted spot on. There are a lot of pricey glycol chillers out there, at least for home brewing, but I may bite the bullet this spring.

I’ve definitely considered going a similar route. I have a closet in my basement that hovers around 50 -60 throughout the winter. I could prob make it work with a similar approach I use a swamp cooler and aquarium heater for saisons. I’ve never even considered the low end of its temp range. I just assume the moment I brew a lager in feb and next thing I know it’s 70 degrees outside.

In other words. I’m good at making excuses for things that I over complicate.

Currently drinking a IIPA by the Grains of Wrath out of Portland, OR.

Why does this belong in the Pittsburgh thread you might ask? Well, as I understand it, this is the operation that replaced Portland Fat Heads. Still not sure I fully understand the story there, but sounded to me like a hipster coup of some sort.

Anyway, this **** doesn't even deserve to hold the beer of a one-off from our beloved Fat Heads, let alone any tried and true flagships or seasonals*

In conclusion - **** you, Grains of Wrath for ruining the funding for my Fat Heads Charlotte location.

Long Live the Fat Head.

*Grains of Wrath beer is pretty good

I thought Von Ebert replaced that Fat Heads.

If you guys are serious about making excellent lagerbier, reading this is a look into the rabbithole that is lager brewing.

Yeah...... My approach to brewing is much more primitive than anything that would ever pass with that any concept of LODO. Its definitely interesting information though. Someday when i am willing to throw some more resources toward the hobby i might head down that rabbit hole.

I miss shuggy

Someone drive up to Moraine State Park, dig through the beautiful Lake Arthur sand (carefully, as to avoid any used needles), and find a Conch shell to blow into so that we can summon him once again.
