I tried pitching into my BK after recirculating thru my CFC until it was 70 degrees. I didn't rehydrate my Safale us-05. I would have, but the yeast package didn't say to rehydrate or give temp parameters. So I just sprinkled into the BK, gave it a stir with a a sanitized spoon and sent it to the sanke I'm fermenting in. I hit it with O2 on the way over.

Seems to me like the yeast just clumped up. Some seemed to stick to the side of the BK. I'm wondering if much yeast even made it to fermenter at this point as I had a lot of cold break and I'm using a bazooka style tube to filter break material coming out of the BK.

I suppose I'll know soon enough if fermentation is happening. Next time I'll definitely rehydrate if pitching in BK.

Can anyone share their technique for pitching in the BK? Thanks.
 
If using dry yeast, it always helps to rehydrate before you pitch. This helps activate the yeast and they mix with your wort much more effectively.

Sprinkling dry yeast on your wort without rehydrating kills about half the yeast.

I will often pitch in the boil kettle for 10 or 15 gallon batches when using liquid yeast rather than try to evenly split the starter between 2 or 3 carboys.

I often pitch in the BK, but, i use a starter. I then infuse O2, and pump to the fermenter. It's all the same deal.
 
Yeah, probably would have been better if I'd rehydrated, though. Lesson learned.
