I am trying to create a recipe (1st time) for an oatmeal stout. Here is what i have so far..

#1
Malts/Fermentables
% lb oz
74% 6 9 Dark Liquid Extract
11% 1 0 Oats, Flaked
6% 0 8 Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L
6% 0 8 Roasted Barley
3% 0 4 Chocolate Malt

Hops
boil 60 mins 1.0 Goldings, East Kent
boil 60 mins 1.0 Fuggles
boil 15 mins 0.25 Goldings, East Kent

IBUs
24.7

Yeast
Wyeast #1084 Irish ale yeast

Since I am using a dark LME, I went lighter on barley and malts
And I don't want it to be overly hoppy so i went with "Mild" hops

I am new to brewing (this will be my 3rd batch) so i am looking for some constructive criticism/ thoughts/ suggestions

THANKS

I would use pale/light extract, it will give you more control over what goes into your beer (and will make it easier to convert to all-grain should you ever want to). Even with that switch you probably have enough dark malts/grains for a smooth roast, although you could up both the chocolate and roasted barley by 4 oz if you wanted a more assertive roast.

If you want it to be a partial mash you'll also need to add a couple pounds of pale (Maris Otter, Golden Promise, 2-row, whatever) to provide the enzymes to convert the starches in the oats into fermentable sugars.

Hops/yeast sound perfect to me.

Hope that helps, good luck!

++to what Oldsock says

That's not really a partial mash as written. You need some 2-row or other pale malt in there in order to convert the oats. At least a pound.

Thanks for the replies,

Here is what i came up with in the Malt/fermentables section

% Lb Oz
61% 6 6 Light/Pale Malt Extract Syrup
14% 1 8 American Two-row Pale
10% 1 0 Oats, Flaked
6% 0 10 Roasted Barley
5% 0 8 Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L
4% 0 6 Chocolate Malt (US)

Added 2-row, switched to a light extract, upped the barley and chocolate hopville says color will be 29° SRM / 58° EBC(Dark Brown to Black)

Thanks for the help

Looks good to me, hope it turns out well (let us know).
