Just finished up the brew day, third beer I'll have done- partial mash honey cream ale with vanilla and pecan.

The sample is incredibly cloudy with particulate matter which I'm sure is to be expected.

I'm wondering, though- could this particulate matter be throwing off my OG reading? It seems likely. Just look at this...

Surely something is off. Any experience is welcome.

Particles in the sample would not affect the SG reading. The particles would just be suspended. CO2 bubbles clinging to the hydrometer can float it higher.

Did you do a full or partial boil? An incomplete mix of top off water, with a partial boil, and the boiled wort can result in drawing a hydrometer sample that is heavier to sugars, resulting in a SG reading that is on the high side.

It must have been the sugar- I just pulled another sample and got 1.054 so I'm good. I knew something was wrong.
