This term is all new to me, I had to read up on it. So, I'm watching Fox25 news channel when they announced that the "Green Light" is given for sales in the US but it's up to individual states to approve it's own sales on this powdery beverage. lol

Who's going to give Palcohol a try? I can't see many people on this forum switching their beloved brewing style any time soon but it just goes to show how quick the government is to accept new ways to collect another tax dollar off of alcohol.

Has anyone tried Powered Alcohol, what does it cost to mix up a batch? I never thought I would be able to mix an alcohol beverage up just like Kool Aid.

IMHO, it's a bad idea. How long till somebody starts snorting it? Or trying to smoke/vape it? What's so bad about the tried & true liquid form? The inventor claims that it is great in situations where weight is a major factor IE: backpacking. If you want to drink while backpacking, fine. You should have to carry a little more weight; it's part of the price you pay for the luxury of booze. Then there's the quality; ever tried freeze-dried ice cream? What happens if you mix the powdered stuff with liquid booze? Is it possible to make 400 proof booze? Won't be long till somebody tries it.

It's bad enough that we have these "push-button" bars, where everything is pre-programmed & pre-measued so that all mixed drinks are mechanically mixed & dispensed by the computer at the press of a button, what will happen when bars start using the powdered stuff cuz it's cheaper and/or easier? It's like the difference between Tang & real orange juice or the difference between sun tea & powdered iced tea. I'm sure kids will love it, along with the BMC crowd who won't really notice any difference. I won't even try the stuff, because I deserve much better than that. That's not a boast, it's a FACT.
Regards, GF.

It's just another thing. I'd be curious to see what it's like, but I have no interest in making it a regular addition to my daily diet.

of course, I'm not a teenager or 20's something. I'm sure they will find fun and exciting ways to use powdered alcohol to enliven their gatherings.

On the video on their website it says that it would take you an hour to snort the equivalent of a single shot of vodka. Plus it will feel like snorting hot sauce. But yes, i agree.... Stupid.

I like the idea...... like anything else it has it's place... Will it be abused.. Heck yes... Americans abuse everything! But think about the possibilities... Hiking, Camping, First Aid Kit and the most obvious... Your "WTSHTF / Zombie Apocalypse" Survival Kit! I initially was contemplating the idea of walking into a movie theater or to a sporting event with a few ounces of this in a plastic baggie..... Then I realized... might not be a good idea to pull a zip lock baggie of a white powdery substance out in front of folks!!!!!

This could be used by a backpacker to lighten ths pack.

Other then that a sure receipe for death and desaster... surly a law suite ... so what company would even carry the liabiality insurance.

A product like this was reviewed in a backpacker mag back in the seventies. It was described as the liquid enclasulated inside. Sort of like pop rocks.

I've packed a couple of beers in my pack before. It's definitely something you notice when you're hiking several miles and you just want a few pounds lighter!

But I'd never consider carrying anything that tastes like sht just to get a buzz at the end of the hike. Honestly, I ended up just not bringing beer to the island and learned to enjoy warm water as a refreshment.

I might try it if it ever comes out. The product has attracted a bit of negative attention, which maybe is the typical fear of the unknown or the fear of something new.
I checked out their website and it appears they are going to make different cocktails, like a cosmopolitan, in a pouch that you just add water to and shake. You can then add ice if you want and drink out of the pouch or pour into a glass. Pretty clever, depending on the taste and the price, it could be a hit. Here's the website:

http://www.palcohol.com/

Liquor manufactures have a tremendous profit margin, so of course they are worried the price of Palcohol will undercut them and they are going to pay big bucks to politicians to ban it. I could go on a separate rant about our corrupt politicians, but that's a little off topic.
Politicians have used the control of alcohol to gain power and money since the earliest days of our nation. The whiskey rebellion (1791) was an effort to protest the taxation and reduction of freedom by a tyrannical government. Now, we just accept this kind of reduction of our rights as "the way it is".
(sorry had to put a short rant in)
The brewing network had a taste test with reconstituted backpacking beer a month or so ago, the verdict was the product wasn't that great,
but it looks like these kinds of products are going to be produced.

I'll have to try it once.

For science.

I don't know why it's even an issue.

Why does the Government have any say over what I put in my body?

Makes no sense to me.

Because, apparently, you are too stupid to understand the ramifications of this dangerous undertaking! Our leaders are just trying to save us from ourselves.:cross:

i'd like to sprinkle it on instead of powdered sugar. Think how good that doughnut would be!!! Or that 'puppy-chow' stuff made with chex cereal and chocolate and powdered sugar.

Actually, it probably doesn't taste very good.

I'll hang on to my money until there's an alcohol skin patch released.

I'm still mystified about how you go about turning liquid alcohol into powder without loosing all your alcohol content.

It's not. It's alcohol suspended in some kind of crystal/matrix etc. which is apparently bulkier than water.

I'd put this in my earthquake kit, which is now a storm kit since I don't live west any longer. Who knows, if I'm doing down then I'd go down drinking swill from a pouch.

That's what it sounds like to me. The only advantage it has over liquid alcohol is that it doesn't spill.

Well, I suppose it does spill, but it spills differently or something.

I did some research into this powdered alcohol stuff and what I came up with is that it must be this. Grain alcohol (190 proof stuff) mixed with N-Zorbit M and some flavoring.

N-Zorbit M is a funky maltodextrin derived from tapioca. It is commonly used to powder oils for certain fancy food applications. However, it will also absorb alcohol to some degree while remaining a powder. For this to work, the alcohol must be nearly pure with little to no water included.

My personal experience with pure food grade industrial alcohols is that they are very very fusel. So I expect the Palcohol product will be really lousy. The only decent pure food grade alcohol that I have even known of has never been legal to buy. ;)

So that's the big secret to Palcohol busted. N-Zorbit M is the secret.
