Oxyclean Question

I picked up some Oxyclean from the store and had a few questions. I plan to bottle this weekend.

1. The store didn't have any Oxyclean Free, just the regular Oxyclean stain remover so I picked that up. Is that ok to use? I hope so.

2. How long should I put my bottles in the Oxyclean solution for? I've read 1 hour and I have also read 24 hours. Im using both plastic and glass bottles.

Im hopefully going to get some starsan to sanitize afterwards. If the store by my house doesn't have some, im going to use iodophor.

Love OxiClean. Here are my answers:

1. So you got the powdered OxiClean but it's "versatile", not "versatile free"? If it has the perfume added you can still use it, but rinse like crazy to get all of it out. I've had trouble finding the Free kind too.
2. Unless you had some major gunk buildup on your bottles there is no reason let them soak for 24 hours, or even 1 hour to clean them. That said, I would throw away any bottles with gunk stuck on them. If they are pretty clean just give them a 5 minute soak to be sure, then rinse really well and sanitize. It's best to wash your bottles right after you finish them to make sure nothing glues to the inside.

if you are talking about delabeling 24 hours should completely de-label the bottles. You could soak for less but why not give it a day?

rinse very thoroughly and always sanitize before use.

Ah I thought he meant cleaning but you're right he might have meant delabeling. I usually let them soak overnight for that but most of the labels are floating in the water after 3-4 hours.

I clean with scented Oxyclean.. it is not no rinse and I have never had the smell not easily wash off with a normal rinse. If the smell stays on glass you didn't rinse it well enough to begin with

Ok... I have just realized that I am an idiot for not getting the obvious. I seriously have never even thought about this, yet I fill all my bottles before "laying them down" to soak so they don't float. The funny thing is that I would probably use less water and be able to remove labels from more bottles at once by employing this simple idea. As Homer J. Simpson would say.............. "DOH!"

Don't be so hard on yourself, we are all here to learn stuff from each other. Your "more bottles at once" is right on, here is a picture of soaking the lables off of two cases - 48 bottles - at once, using one of those under-bed storage containers. These are silk screened lables removed using a CLR dilute; could do the same of course with sticky lables and Oxy.

Thanks a lot for the responses guys. Yes, I will be delabeling. I think I will just throw them in a bucket with oxyclean in the morning and leave it all day.

If you can, start them off in really hot water too...that helps loosen the glue. I have over 1000 bottles that I have cleaned and delabled in my inventory. I fill the bathtub up with oxy and water, and throw the bottles in. Then over the course of a week or so I clean them all up.

Don't burn yourself out, clean 6-12 a day until you get them all cleaned. That's what I do anyway. My friends and family all save their bottles for me and it has really got out of control....I will have 2000 bottles before I know it. Funny thing is that I keg most of my beer.

I tell ya one thing, Sam Adams labels come off in just a plain water soak for me.
I'd used oxiclean on some one evening, and the next evening after having a couple beers, I placed them submerged in the container, forgetting to put in a bit of oxiclean. Well, after 2 hours they came right off anyway.

You can also order OxyClean free via online vendors. Use Google's shopping link to see the various places (drugstore.com carries it).

The price is comparable to picking it up at the supermarket -- even with shipping. It's tiny bit more expensive, but it's worth it, IMHO.

It's hard to find locally (sometimes -- although now my supermarket carries it) but it's not too hard to find online.
