Hey guys, and ladies. I am in the process of making my first batch of cider. I have 3 gallons of cider I pressed in the primary, been 2 weeks. I'm excited about the outcome and assuming everything turns out good. Next batch, I'm out of fresh pressed cider. What, if anything, can I do/get to start a second batch? Anything store-bought? If so, what is the process? Thank you in advance.

Frozen juice concentrate is a good option, as it's almost always without preservatives. Assuming your carboy is 3 gallons (384 ounces), you'd want 8 cans of the frozen juice. Fully reconstituted according to directions this comes out to exactly 3 gallons of juice. You'd be able to use the last 2 cans or so of water per gallon for any additional sugar/honey/whatever you want to add in. Pour/draw off a large cup of the stuff to rehydrate the yeast if you dont pitch it in dry.

Also, you can take advantage of any sales going on and stock up since you can keep them stored in the freezer for a while.

Where do you live? Local mills should still be pressing cider this time of year.

If you have Food Lion in your area they have Knudsens cider for $6.99 gallon and it comes in a 1 gallon glass jug. I just bought some brand new 1 gallon jugs and they were $4.50 0r $5 each so the cider is really costing $2.50.
The cider comes with vanilla and some other spices/flavors added but I didn't see any preservatives. Haven't tried it so can't say what it will taste like before or after fermentation. If you don't have Food Lion your local store may have something similar, or if there are any orchards in your area that pack and ship apples you can ask if they have any rejects or "seconds"
available.

Thanks for the info. I live in Upstate NY, just north of Syracuse. Maybe I'll make some calls to local orchards.

Wegmans apple juice will work, $2.79 for a 1/2 gallon. Also you should be able to find Musselman's cider at Walmart, about $4 per gallon.
:mug:

Thank you. I saw Walmart carries the Musselman's Spiced Cider as well...

Generally it's cheaper to use the bottled juice than the frozen concentrate, but your mileage may vary. You can always compare the price per gram of sugar to see what's what.

The Knudsen's juice isn't true cider IMO; I just tried it for the first time today and it tastes like reconstituted juice with apple sauce blended in. The glass jugs do make it worth it if you want to make small batches for experiments.

You can also play around with other fruit juices (cranberry, banana, cherry, blueberry, pomegranate, etc) or spices (vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, ...) to make things interesting!
