hey all was wondering is there anything eles that is good to use other then pbw to clean out my carboys and 5gallon kegs? i like pbw but its not the least expensive product out there.. and was wondering if there is anything eles i could use that would clean just around as good ..but cheaper.. i thought i read that oxiclean i good, but there was a certin style i had to look for ..any input would be great , thanks

OxyClean Free or I have heard of peple using Sun Oxygen cleaner with comparable results.

Just try to find a color-/odor-free variety if possible.

There is a thread on here about sun oxygen bleach . I mix that with tsp from the hardware store. Fifty fifty. Diy pbw.

well how much oxiclean would i need to use to clean a 5 or 6.5 gallon glass carboy? cause i just looked online and with amazon i can get a 3pound oxiclean free for $9

I use star san now which is powerful but I do miss PBW because it was Earth friendly and efficient as well. Star san is cheap, can act as a yeast starter from what i hear if there are bubbles left in fermenter and an ounce can clean five gallons.

Just be aware that StarSan is a sanitizer, not a cleanser. There is a difference. StarSan will do nothing for you if there is dried-on gunk or krausen residue in your carboy.

sooo can somone answer my question on how much i need to use... not on everything but what i asked??

Nothing beats PBW, IMO. Just mix up a solution and keep it in a five-gallon bucket with a lid on. When I started brewing nearly two years ago, I picked up a four pound container of PBW ... I still have half left. As long as you rinse, scrub, rinse, then use the PBW, it'll last quite a while ... once it gets noticeably dirty, toss it. I do the same thing with Star San.

I've been using about 1/2 of the scoop supplied in my oxyclean box in my 6 gallon Better Bottles. I have left it 3-4 days when procrastinating the cleanup. I have also had no problem rinsing off the slimy residue that others have had a problem with. Oxyclean works great and I think it is a lot cheaper that PBW. I have not felt the need to add TSP or anything else.

I use the sun oxygen cleaner. The same thing as oxyclean at 1/3 the price from wal mart. One scoop per gallon and soak for a couple day , rinse and scrub, rinse again. That should clean it out, but there are little nooks and crannies to get clean, so a second soak may be in order. Sanitize with what you use, & your done. Cheers:)

Better yet, head to your local hardware store or grocery store and support a business in your community. But, yeah, oxyclean works great. Soaking empty beer bottles in it works great for cleaning and/or getting stubborn labels off as well.
