Made this several years ago and it's kind of strong! I got about 1/3 the through the pint and could really feel it!

No fear, though, I switched to New Holland's Beer Barrel Bourbon while I eat dinner and watch Red Wings.

I think the wife is a little scared, a little excited about what's in store for later! 8-D

Lastley, it's hard as hell to type on a phone when you got a good buzz going!

God. Belgian Golden Strong Ale is officially on my WEEKEND ONLY list. I even got a "how ya feeling?" from the woman this morning. Truth be told, I don't feel terrible, but I am looking forward to later in the day when I will likely feel much better.

I went to bed early with somewhat high expectations. Not sure what time the wife came to bed.

On the plus side, we did get up early too. :ban:

Not a good decision. I could hardly taste the BBB with dinner. I think it's really best to drink by itself, when you can fully appreciate the subtle flavors. I would have been as well off pouring a glass of $10 Old Crow!

As an FYI, Beer Barrel Bourbon is noticeably smoother than that cheap Old Crow stuff. I'm no connysewer of fine spirits, but even I can taste the difference.

Update: Headache is mostly gone and stomach seems ok. I managed to eat as normal today. I'm only a little tired from poor sleep last night. All of that from 1 pint of BSGA, and maybe a double shot of bourbon. And a full turkey dinner with dessert. Sucks to be a lightweight!

I think the whether or not the bourbon shot happened had a lot to do with it. Liquor before beer - in the clear, Beer before liquor - never sicker. Also, getting old compounds this problem. :cross:

Ok, maybe this weekend I'll do a test. Some bourbon first, then a pint of BGSA. And a Turkey dinner.

I'm betting it's the tryptophan!

Yep, I have a bottle of it as well, good stuff! I made a IIPA with about 4# of honey in it a while back that sounds pretty similar to your Belgian, after one or two glasses you would really feel it the next day. I never measured FG on it but I'm guessing it came in around 15% or better.

Side note: Keep an eye out for Weller 12 year.. It's the exact same recipe as Pappy Van Winkle but aged 12 years instead of 15 and about 25 per bottle compared to 150 or more for Pappy 15 if you can find it. I heard they discontinued production of it to make more Pappy but I still see bottles of it hanging around at the liquor store.
