I think I may have pulled a boo-boo....

I just bottled a batch of MrBeer "Canadian Draft". I thought it might be a good idea to put the empty can with the bottles, so that I could know what it was (in case I like it).

When I looked at the can, the "Use by date" is June 2008........ I'm not sure how I missed that but be it as it is..... is this stuff "Safe" to consume or will it just not be as "Good" as it should be?????

As I was bottling it, my wife said, "That is one good smelling beer". It did smell good and I didn't give it a thought.

Older extracts tend not to ferment out fully. So, additional "extract twang" may be a problem with your brew. It may also come out quite a bit darker than it should have.

As far as safe goes, there shouldn't be "too" much of a problem, as long as the storage temp. never got too out of hand.

Let it ferment out, and report back on how it turned out!

Thanks...... my wife was a nurse and she is sort freaked out that it could have botulism after all that time....... I just don't know.:drunk:

Every time I see this I laugh harder. This should be mandatory for all new brewers to watch. Still cannot believe he said he "dry coconuted".

If the can showed no signs of damage inside you are ok.

It might be darker, but from a sealed can, it might not be a problem.

"UMMMM........ It tastes........ well....... a little like that taste that you get in your mouth after you burp"

and all with a straight face...... OH NO!!!!! I'm starting to laugh again...:p

I bought a kit and refills from a garage sale. They likely were stored in the garage I'm guessing. They were slightly outdated by 1-3 months. All of them were terrible despite tossing the booster for DME, adding additional hops for flavor and aroma, and using US-05 yeast.

The better 2 tasted like molasses. The other 2 were disgusting!

I ended up not saving much of anything on the 2 fermentors and plastic bottles that I wanted. Not to mention the wasted ingredients that I added…

But I'd still buy another kit if the price was right and I knew it was stored properly.

"…personally I drink Pabst Blue Ribbon and Bud Light very frequently so I'm not going to mind how a Mr Beer tastes."

And then after describing how awful it is says:

"That said though, I could actually get used to this."

Priceless!

Love this video!

Good news....... I drank a bottle a few days ago and I'm still alive.....:D

Bad news......... very little carbonation..... little to know head. :(

Good news....... It tastes great. Even my wife likes it.:mug:

I recently brewed a Canadian Draft i found laying around with a date of 2010. Bought new yeast and it turned out ok. Definitely had that extract twang and much darker than it normally would be, but over all drinkable and surprisingly decent.

Good to hear! With more time the carb should come up. If after another week or two, still little to no fizz, give the bottles a gentle swirl to rouse the yeast back up. Also, make sure they are in room temps. 70* - 75* so the yeasts are warm enough to do their job.

I did buy new yeast from our local HB supplier. I brought the can with me so he would know what kind to give me (I'm a little surprised that he didn't notice the date on the can).

I left it in the closet for 2 weeks after bottling then put it in the fridge for a week.

Do you think that I should take it back out of the fridge or is it too late?

Might want to gently shake them a little to rouse the yeast. Don't shake it too much though.

What a difference a couple weeks makes.

I put a bottle in the fridge over-night. I just poured it into a frosty glass and the head was perfect. Retention was good but after about 30 minutes it was done (but then again, so was the beer). It had a nice robust flavor..... much better than 2 weeks ago :mug:. No after taste......... I'm quite impressed and it's a little hard to type after drinking a liter of that stuff......:tank:

Thanks a lot for your help. I can't wait to see what it's like in another month. I'm going to bring it to a New Years party.....:ban:
