Old Grains for Sour Ale

Cool.. I hate to throw out things and the grains are about 6 months old and are not something I would use for anything else
 
I would disagree. Good sour beer starts with good beer. While there is a place in brewing for aged hops, not so much for stale malt. With that said, how have you stored the malt? If it was airtight and doesn't fell damp or smell/taste stale then you might be fine. From your post, if you wouldn't brew non sour beer with it, just toss it.
 
Toss-- the grains were in an airtight bag,, but somehow the heat seal broke at some point and they are stale

I'm not sure the old crushed and stale grain can manage enzimatic conversion...
 
I found a pound of pale malt I bought five plus years ago. Next weekend it's getting mashed, for the h*ll of it. Be interesting to see what, if anything, it does. It definitely smells stale, beyond stale.

Sounds great, post back! Interested to see if you have poor extract vs just bleh taste.
