I've got a brew planned for this weekend and went to look at my Fast Pitch and saw the canned date is 5-5-16...
Is that too old to use as a starter?

It’s probably fine. I’ve stored homemade starter in mason jars for over a year with no issues and I’m sure the qc wherever that fast pitch is made is better than my lazy method

I popped a can last week to make a starter and it smelled terrible and was jet black. NB said the printed date is the born on date and the do NOT expire since they are pasteurized. They made it right and replaced it.

Did they say what couldve happened to it?

No, but they wanted pictures of it and the date code. I popped another one in the 4 pack and it appears to have been just that one can.
