old beer

Hi all,

Picked up some ball lock tanks the other day, and 2 of the tanks still had beer in them. I asked the person how long the beer was in the keg, and they said they were not sure,but probably 2 years anyway. They said they were both dark beers. One keg still had pressure in it, while the other didnt.

Ya think the beer would be ok, or not? I know the only way to check is to put her in the fridge and hook er up, but just curious if anyone else has had beer over 2 years, and it was still good

Longest I have gone is 6-7 months without any problems. I would hook up the one with pressure and check it out.

You never know, it could be some of the best beer you've had.

I will put the pressurized one in the kegerator and hook it up, and the other one I will open it and smell it.

A lot will depend on how they were stored. For every 10 deg C the staling reactions double in speed. A beer stored at 10C will stale roughly twice as fast as one stored at 0C. If these were kept in cold storage I bet the pressurized one is fine, if they were stored in a hot garage then it probably won't be good.

checked the unpressurized one.................really bad!!!
Got the other one in fridge now, will check in couple hours

I have wondered the same think, as I have a couple of kegs I picked up from a former home brewer that are dated around 2006, one is a stout I think and the other is blueberry mead, both still under pressure, and several others that have lost their pressure. I believe they have been stored in a garage prior to me getting them, which means they have experienced 100* + temperatures being in Texas.

checked the one that had pressure in it today, and it wasnt as bad as the first,unpressurized one. Poured a glass, and it was fairly clear, but had an off taste, not from an infection, but kind of a vinegary taste. If I was skid row material, it would be drinkable, but I have 2 kolsch,1 cream ale,and a nut brown kegged, so dont need the swill.

Hahaha....nice. Thanks for the conclusion, I think everyone was hoping for a "can't believe how good it is" response but yours is much more realistic.

I got some bombers from a guy that had spent at least one summer in a garage. I suspect it was a hefe at one point, but it has dropped crystal clear now, so it's more of a spiced amber. Altogether not as bad as I had expected. Not great beer, but well worth drinking.
