Ok, has anyone ever seen this? Please help

Pitched yeast on a Sat mid day. By Sun night, brew had come up through air lock and was bubbling out. Then I opened lid of the fermenter to relieve air pressure. Then it started coming over the edge of fermenter. Is this just crazy yeast??!!

Looks like a violent fermentation. Best thing to do is make yourself a blow off tube by attaching a piece of tubing (5/8 I believe) to the center pice of the airlock and placing the other end of the tube to a mason jar full of vodka or Star San.

This will allow the layer of krausen you have coming out of the bucket to escape without making a huge mess. Just make sure the escape jar is lower than the airlock so you don't risk anything getting sucked back in to the fermenter.

The same thing happened to me on my first brew. I put a brick on top of the bucket for fear the co2 would cause the lid to come flying off!

You're fine... sort of, the beer is fine. You typically want to begin fermentation with a blow off tube (hose stuck in the hole in the fermenter lid, other end in a bucket/glass/whatever of star san) rather than an air lock. This will allow all teh extra krausen to "blow off" rather than stop up your airlock and make a mess.

Relax.....clean things up with a towel soaked in star san as carefully as possible, and rig a blow off up until fermentation slows down.... and have a homebrew

Ok thanks. I'll use a blow off tube from now on. I'll set it up tomm. For now, I surrounded the base of the fermenter in towels. I'll clean tomm. Crazy

You can also search "ceiling mop" if you want Kato.... I highly recommend that search if you're debating whether or not to use a Blow Off Tube ASAP.

A tube that fits in a racking cane can be forced over the inner hole of the airlock. Sanitizing it in a hot water solution will help it stretch easier.

Ha, wise decision... I usually stick the hose directly in the hole in the lid, sometimes the airlocks have a little crosshair type thing in the bottom of the stem that goes in the lid, Krausen clogs that up real quick and you're right back where you started. Anything beats what you've got going on right now though!!

Most likely your temp was a little high and the yeast got excited. Aside from it being messy, you don't really have any worries. As noted above, this beer is off gassing pretty strongly - so air getting into the bucket is not a problem.

Likely by tomorrow it will have calmed down quite a bit and you can clean up the airlock and put it back in.

I also go straight into the grommet in the lead, or straight into the hole in the stopper.

Assuming you need to make a trip to the store for the tubing for a blow-off setup and that you're not going to do that until tomorrow, this is the best setup.

A blowoff tube is best, but follow this advice instead of waiting until tomorrow.

You've probably already reached "high tide" and it might just be calm fermentation from here on out.

Perfect. No ceiling mop necessary.

You can clean the bucket up with a starsan soaked rag/paper towel if you want, or just wait until you bottle and clean it then.

Will the fermenter fit in the bucket? From the picture it looks large enough, if it will do it and ice it down.

you can actually take the lid off for the first day or 2 when the top blows in your case and its actually better so it doesn't clog and keep clogging, then clean, sanitize and put it back on after it goes down

No bucket large enough. It's mid 60s up in my attic where beer is

Blow off is mildly effective. Small bubbles at lid where seal is poor. Half expecting it to explode overnight.

If it seems like the tube is going to get clogged up quickly, that may be a good idea. Better to use a floor mop than a ceiling mop.
