My wort which is ferminting in a 7 gallon bucket is burping. The wort is in the air lock. What do i do? IM happy about the activity but damn

I don't use an airlock - set lid on top loosely and snap down once the vigorous fermentation is done. If it is a big beer that might overflow, I put it in my laundry sink in the utility room, wipe it up and then snap lid down... nothing to worry about.

Cheers!

Pop it off, clean it out, replace with a blowoff tube if you have one.

And give thanks to the yeasties for doing such a great job! :mug:

If its a three piece airlock, u can take the lid off, take the bubbler out and push a hose on the piece coming out of the middle, or, take the whole bubbler out and jam a hose into the grommet that fits tightly. Either way, put the other end in a pint glass about 1/3 full of water and let it go. Be prepared that krausen still may come through the tube, but the lid shouldn't blow off. It's great activity but a mess to clean up and potentially spoiled beer. Next time u should leave more head space, but a 5 gallon batch in 7 gallon bucket should be good. I've modified my lids now with a 1/2" barb that has o rings so it's air tight, then just stick a 1/2" hose on that in a 2l mason jar with water in it. This is basically how it's done in a small brewery. 3/8 tubing may be a better size though, 1/2 tends to not get a very voracious bubbling, which to me means that the pressure requirements may be too high, sothat there's a chance the lid may still blow. Gonna try that sometime.

Any way, hope this helps.

This has me excited lol, had no clue this much activity would happen. I took the airlock out and steriled it and added sterile water back in it.

Have a pretty big stout going crazy right now - woke up to the blowoff tube full, and the bucket lid was all distended upwards, about to pop. Released the pressure, cleaned and put the tube back, 15 minutes later the tube was full again. Gave up on the tube - removed the plastic bung from the bucket, covered it with some muslin soaked in starsan, and walked away. Hope I can get the tube back on before tonight.
