I just brewed an AHS Dos Equis Amber Lager clone. I also just (finally) got a hydrometer.

The instructions said the OG should be 1.049. I added a BrewVint ABV boost to the boil, and got a OG of 1.059.

Does that sound right? Did I read it right?

What temp did you take the reading at and if it was hot/cold, did you adjust the reading?

can someone explain how to adjust for temp?

You should have a chart that came with your hydrometer. It has a base temp (68 on mine). No adjustment is needed at the base temp. There are +/- adjustments depending on the temperature variation from the base temp.

Did you take the reading before or after you diluted your beer to 5 gallons? It will be much higher if you measured it from your 3 gallon boil before adding 2 gallons of boiled water, like most directions suggest.

That thought occurred to me this morning. I had added the the wort concentrate to the boiled water, but I don't know how well it had mixed. I pulled the sample right after adding it, and right off the top of the bottle.

I guess my question boils down to: How much will adding about a pound of corn sugar effect the OG?

You just described how I use a brew vint to get a 1.055 - 1.060 SG and then when my FG won't go below 1.020 I still get 5% beer. If it goes below 1.020, then I get super awesome ignore post-election terror daydream beer.:drunk:

Carry on.

A half shot of vodka in the glass will work in a pinch. My math comes out to it making 5% beer to about 7%, more or less.

I went through a six of SA cherry wheat that way Tuesday night.
