I just brewed up a partial mash recipe from Morebeer.com for an Irish Red yesterday. The recipe is for 5 gallons but because I have 5 gallon carboys I have about 4.5 gallons in there, the OG was supposed to be 1.050-1.058 according to the recipe, I got 1.070 when I took a reading.

Wondering if 1.2 a gallon is enough to be the reason, and if I should maybe add some water to it or somthing? I am thinking I may not have mixed it up enough before taking the reading maybe????

If their target volume was 5.7 gallons, then you're close. You should invest in a larger fermenter, because you are likely to have blowouts with so little head space. Buckets are cheap and work quite well.

Ha, these are batches number 2 and 3 for me, and I have already accepted the fact that a blow off tube is the way to go for a few days at least :D
