i started a batch of english pub ale last night and the OG was well under what the expected gravity should have been. it was also less that the last time i brewed this recipe. OGexpected= 1.045; OGobserved=1.032 [last time 1.044]

should i be concerned?

Well, to be more precise, it's impossible for the OG to vary from situation to sotuation. It's possible for brewer to misread, to missample, for the instructions to be in error, etc.

So if you got the proportions right the OG has to be correct and you just measured it wrong. The most likely reason is that your wort wasn't thoroughly mixed and the sample you took was more watery than the rest.

Don't worry and don't do anything. The OG *is* correct.

How consistent has your fermentation volume been?

I used to have inconsistent volumes and OGs before i started measuring volume before the boil and knew how much my system boiled of, i had no idea what a rolling boil was so every boil i did was a rager plus my BK had a rather large surface area.
