2007 Bon chien

We opened a 2006 a couple months ago and it was incredible... helped cement Bon Chien as one of my all-time faves.

Recent tastings (I apologize ahead of time for the ******/blurry pictures; I was drinking heavily).

The "I drove to Philly to surprise a buddy for his birthday" tasting:

Best beers included Zenne, '15 Fou, '14 Vig, Rye Black Magick, ManBearPig, and the Hanssens Kriek trio (two different bottlings of Schaerbeekse and the recent batch of Scarenbecca).

The "Random weekday bottleshare because Ray is in town" tasting:

Cellarman, Backacre, and the weekdays topped the share for me.

And lastly, the "Let's drink the weekdays and open way too many other beers" share:

This coooooovie was awesome.

A flight at Great Notion in Portland a few weeks back. Went by there last night to grab a crowler and they were out of virtually everything. They really can't keep up with the demand.

Such a great time. The ogv was an 03 and probably the best bottle of the vintage that i have had.

Had a homebrew tasting last night to help me make some room for new beers. (was also running out of bottles)

Also got to try this which was a thank you bottle a friend brought over before the tasting. Amazing beer.

Had 24 different beers with enough of each to get 12 people 3-4oz pours. I think we did ok.

Last night with a few guys. I tried to put them in order but not sure how accurate my memory is. Not pictured: Drie Fonteinen OGV St. Valentijn Day Cuvee (had always wanted to try this beer since my birthday is Valentine's Day and was not disappointed by the beer - deep moldy wet basement funk, moderate carb) and Cigar City Error Establishing Database Connection (solid, prominent cognac character and the orange peel added a nice touch).

Boneyard Notorious: This beer is consistently awesome. Have loved it every time I tried. Killer nose, insane drinkability for nearly 12%.
Monkish Foggy Window: This was the first I've had of these canned hoppy beers from Monkish. Nice but probably should have drank before Notorious.
Key Lime Tau: Exactly as advertised with the lime. Nice beer.
Nocturn Chrysalis B3: Always good. JK tends to deliver with the fruit beers.
2009 120 Minute: Still hot.
Ginger Bu Rice: Seems to me like the ginger has died down a bit (which, depending on your feelings on ginger, could be good or bad).
Tilquin^2: God damn. Wish I'd bought a bunch of these when they came out.
Chat d'Or: Sweet and sour. Doesn't drink its 10.4%.
Ozark BDCS 2016: This is fantastic. Creamy, moderate char, touch of heat.
Rye Black Magick: Lives up to the name. Very good now, maybe even better later?
Golden Doesjel: Very nice, easy to drink, still prefer a little carb in lambic, but doesn't touch Golden Blend Gueuze.
Lou Pepe Fram 2011 sticker: Framboise continues to be my favorite type of fruited lambic. This was a great bottle.
Side Project Balaton: Good beer that shouldn't have been drank right next to Lou Pepe Fram. Still prefer Side Project saisons over the fruited series.
Intense Red B1: Fruit still front and center. This wasn't supposed to be aged...or so they said.
Chocolate Covered Cherry BBVD: Background cherry really compliments the vanilla and chocolate up front, light roast. This got better and better as it warmed. Dare I say better than Rye Black Magick right now? Paired great with a cigar as well.
Fantasia 2016: Canned peach character, a little sweeter than I remember this beer. Still very good.
Map of the Sun: Beat out Fantasia in the stone fruit nightcap faceoff. Let's be honest, my palate was shot like 7 beers before this.

Not really a "tasting" so to speak; NAPO and a neighbor stopped by to play pool. And drink beer.

Penrose hosted a few of us in their barrel room Saturday so my buddy could open his full lineup of their wild ales released to date.

It's a great space to have events. They've got loads of full barrels, which is exciting moving forward. All the bottles are 375 mL and we split them 6-8 ways so the tasting wasn't too in depth.

Before they even opened they did a collab with Perennial known as Hereafter. The white sage is adding a slightly bitter finish but the carb was solid as well as a nice dryness. Only hints of pear left, not juicy any longer.

In terms of the Penrose releases, 5 and 6 have both cleaned up very well. Dry finish, bright carb, and a balance of slight tartness and funk. 6 had a more interesting nose from the hops that were added. 8 had some interesting tannic quality and a hint of leather from the cherry skin. Minimal fruit left. 9 was one of my favorites as it tasted like a dry hopped BA saison. Big fruity hoppy nose and a tropical fruit quality that was brought out by the Brett. 7 was clean and tart. Wild 9 cuvee was tzatziki sauce. Dill and cucumber on the nose and in the glass. Agreed to by some employees. It got weird. 10 has mellowed considerably. Minimal bourbon. Tasting like a red wine BA oud bruin. 11 and 12 were fairly similar. Crisp and quite tart. 12 had a hint more funk. 13 was a mess. Acidic past the point of enjoyable. No fruit. Buttery nose and finish. No clue if it was diacytal or not, but it was buttery beyond oak. 14 was superb still. Brett saison in stainless. Hopefully something that will become a regular on draft. 16 hasn't come together. Some bitterness from the citrus but fairly tart with a cereal grain finish. 18 was still drinking well. Basically a crisp and dry Brett IPA with floral hops. SB21 had minimal carb, medium tartness, and still a big cereal grain finish. It has cleaned up a hair in over a year but it just isn't up to the other beers on the table. Wild Plum & Raspberry Punchie had some decent fruit characteristics but the cereal grain finish and strong tartness didn't do it for me.

Wild 17 wasn't part of this tasting but I had it a couple weeks ago and it is probably their best wild. Huge jammy grape flavor balanced by dryness, tartness, and lots of winey-oak character. Great purple color too.

Fantastic...very balanced and complex with funk/fruit. Great carb aND no deating needed. No off-flavors.
