BEST. TASTING. EVER.
Thanks to schwartzoid, buzzword, stupac2, dridge11, slaphappysnark, space_guy9, blabaer, johnnyramirez, obiwan_k3n00bi, obiwan, CheapBeerBuzz, bugdoc, and all the others there! Best ever
I partook in a rare (baby whale?) beer share some friends wanted to do this past weekend. We probably spent a couple months tracking down various bottles for it. Overall, it was a very fun experience but not sure it's something I'm looking to do again soon (or ever).

Some notes (on the highlights and lowlights):
Blanc de Blancs: Some good white wine notes up front before the over-the-top sourness kicks in with an acidic finish.
Fuzzy: Overly sour as well (it mellows a bit as it warms), but the peach character is very good. I feel Side Project is overhyped.
KBBS: The maple and coffee characters are incredible (lots of caramel and dark chocolate as well), and the bourbon backbone complements it perfectly. One thing we noticed was that if you let it warm too much, the flavors completely fall apart into the individual components (definitely weird).

Blabaer 2009: Fresh blueberries and pleasantly sour, with the funk coming out as it warms. Very delicious.
Persica: A perfect balance between the peaches, brett, and oak.
RW Mexican Cake: The spices were still very much present in this bottle. Very surprised at how the chilis and chocolate flavors meshed with the dark grape characters and tannic finish.
SHRBL: An incredible raspberry jam nose and flavor in the front. The finish brings out the oak but also turns a bit acidic (not overly so).
Crianza Helena: It was cool to try, but everyone agreed it was overrated. Some nice peach, citrus, and honey sweetness throughout but not particularly memorable.
Blauw: Lived up to the hype and the best geuze I've ever had. Nose has some wonderful fruit characters (peaches, lemon zest) but also the barnyard funk as well. The flavor is incredibly balanced though, as there is a nice sourness to accompany the funk as well. The beer of the night.
Moscatel Dark Lord
BVDL 2013: The worst beer of the night. It appears there may be some bottle variation with this beer, as our bottle was sour and the slight hint of vanilla left tasted like extract. Several people have told me that they've had bottles that were awesome (and there are those waving the flag for it on the other site as the BEST YEAR EVER) so it was definitely disappointing.
2014 BA Mexican Cake: I didn't particularly like any of them. The base beer is dominated by the tequila booze in the Tequila BA one and the rye in the DB BA one. The best of the 3 was probably the 4 Roses one, but the flavors didn't seem to come together fully in that one either.
We had the exact same issue with BVDL 13 back in June. Like you took the words out of my mouth. It was a glassful of regret honestly. The owner of the bottle tried to extoll the virtues but the rest of us tasted tartness and extract- like vanilla.I partook in a rare (baby whale?) beer share some friends wanted to do this past weekend. Sorry to hear the 2013 BVDL sucked. It was easily one of my favorite beers last year. Yeah it's super sweet, but damn it's hard to imagine anything more packed with vanilla than a BCBS vanilla fresh.I partook in a rare (baby whale?) beer share some friends wanted to do this past weekend.
