but honestly, this one took the cake. a 2007 Dark Lord, that we found in my garage about 2 months back. you can see my original writing on the wax...DL Day was 4/29/2007, I acquired the beer in trade on 5/25/2007...then managed to forget it was in my garage . Anyway, IT WAS ******* GOOD. I'M TALKING REAL GOOD (seriously, look on Untappd from yesterday; no one gave it less than 4/5). Like a glass of toasted coconut/marshmallow/milk chocolate soup. No soy sauce at all. Thank god I have another

At this point I missed a LOT of the beers being poured. I had to pick & choose my battles...

Report back on Akkurat. Will this be one case where the tasting preceeding an Akkurat trip is better than what one has at Akkurat?

Any highlights for the wild rookies?

It was pretty interesting. We discussed process of wild ales, various yeast strains. 2 of the 5 people do industrial yeast management (not beer related) so the conversation became incredibly scientific!

One guy knew about Cantillon and was so excited about Iris that he didn't even try Golden Blend or Tilquin which sucks because I like both of those more than Iris.

Everyone enjoyed the HFS saisons a lot and one person remarked that "I've hated every saison I've had until tonight" and another person complained that none of these beers were heavy on acetone which she liked rodenbach a lot so that's why I brought out the CS Cherry Origins and she loved it.

Overall good time but i should have picekd more accessible sours. Then again, HFS is accessible for us but most of the other stuff isn't.

It's pretty hard to know what people are going to like with sours. I had a mate who I'd go drinking with sometimes and he'd tried all the standard "gateway" beers but he never seemed too enthusiastic about any. Then one night I spied a bottle of Iris that a bar had for $22 (think it was a mistake...) so I asked if he wanted to split it.

It literally changed his life. He went from not really being a beer fan to "omg I need all the beers".

A little 5 man tasting from last weekend. Highlights were BA Abraxas, bvdl, black raz bu, Tempranillo, chez, assassin & my jalapeño chicken wings.
6udXH3r.jpg

The last 3 bottles we popped were the Sumps & we didn't finish all of them but other than that we drank everything. We started @ 3 & went way late. It was impressive. SocalKicks can verify.

I crushed my sumps... and completely passed out right after that... but yeah over the course of 10 or 11 hours we did some damage. Individual highlights for me:

Full album: http://imgur.com/a/WHA6B (there's a cat!)

I hate tasting shots with no opinions, so have some quick notes: (top 5)
  • Wizard Burial Ground | The barrel did incredible things to this
  • Consigliere | Excellent for a dark sour
  • Persimmon | Lots of fruit, not the normal acid bomb I was expecting
  • Between The Staves | Was hoping for more
  • Befuddlement | Was hoping for more
  • Murda’d Out | World class, especially considering Baller was a let down
  • BA Abraxas | This is the best stout I've ever had
  • DB Hunahpu - | World class, but BAA takes the crown
  • El Cid | Best of the Campeador series, chocolate oranges
  • Dark Lord Moscatel | We opened this last, to ensure our pallates were already wrecked, beer was 100% barrel, but not as horrid as expected
  • Deal with the Devil | We let it warm up, can't believe how smooth it was for the 17% abv
  • BA Hi-Fi Rye | Even warm it was like ba cocoa cola, though I don't enjoy the style...

Two bro bang tonight. With EnemyBrewer

Not pictured: About a gallon of Homebrew saisons (blackberry hibiscus using Fantome dregs, Meyer lemon and dandelions with Ale Apothecary/Upright dregs) that make HF look like Sam Adams. Serious.

2012 Fou
Unblended #40

Brap yup.

Two buddies (noobs just getting started) rolled through yesterday for some grillin' and chillin'. Busted out a little variety to expand their horizons/pop their cherries.

Sours and BCBS were a bit too much for them. But, if we're gonna get wet, might as well go swimming.

White Chocolate = infected. Even one of my buddies smelled it first and said "green apples"....****. I guess it was that vintage. Thanks Bruery.

Pre-Zwanze share @ My house. 10 people, 48 hours (there are some bottles and a few growlers not pictured. Also everyone got pours of kegged BCS I think)

I linked to the full res images so you can click on them and view full-size...lots of bottles. Michigan always asks for highlights! I think we checked in to 67 unique beers (including Zwanze Day) from Thursday to Saturday. I only got 22 new unique beer ratings during that time which is still a good number.

---

Huge fan of R&D beers from New Glarus. The CCB Cafe Americano rocked! Crianza was good but not great, Le Bleu was awesome. Two year old Clara and Everett were a nice treat. The Uli Oude Gueuze "Bitter" was really nice! Super funky and cheesy. great weekend! way too much alcohol.

Here are a few Zwanze Day picks:
