Had a little plum sour tasting last night with Pensfan and a few other friends.

Also opened up a few other things over the course of the night.

In my opinion, Out Of The Emptiness > Marius w/ Plums > L'brett D'plum. The Crooked Stave was the most tart of the three, but the Tired Hands had way more plum flavour. Other than that, A Night To End All Dawns (Coffee) and Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock stole the show.

In an effort to avoid the Memorial Day Waterbury VT-pocalypse, I had some home brewers in the area drop in and we opened 2 Liters of Harlan & Amarillo from HFS and then opened these bottles. There were a lot we didn't get around to but it helped me reduce the cellar a bit and most of the people had never had Hill Farmstead before so it was fun sharing.

Of the virgin-HFS tongues who at the start didn't buy into the hype and thought it was just some hipster brewery for weirdos, their favorite bottles were:

1. Port Damon
2. Norma
3. Arthur
4. Birth of Tragedy
5. Everett
6. Suarez
7. BG&E
8. Daybreak
9. Damon
10. Sankt Hans

Amarillo single hop beat out harlan but just barely. Best question of the night, "Norma is really good! Can I get it at Beverage King? in west leb?"

What were the Hill standouts?
  • For me, CD 1-3 were garbage. ****** gold caps perhaps to blame, way over the hill.
  • CD5 and CD9 were amazing, by far the best CD bottles
  • Mimosa bottle 1 was good. Mimosa bottle 2 was better (much more citrus). Having been lucky enough to have Mimosa a year ago, I can vouch that it's going downhill. Still nothing I'd ever turn down, but it's seen better days.
  • This was my first time having Ann. It was amazing...perhaps the best HF bottle of the weekend, and that's me as a Flora lover talking. It was just incredible and if it was better than this fresh than I REALLY feel bad about dealing it away for Blabaer...still the worst trade I've ever made.
  • Elab 2 was sneaky great, loved that beer.
  • Norma B1 > Norma B3 > Norma B2. B2 was clearly the "worst" of the batch, although still great. 1 and 3 tasted very similar to me.
Other notes of mine:
  • Vanilla Dark Lords were stupid good as always. The 2014 version is the biggest vanilla bomb I've ever had. Starting to think I GREATLY prefer these things fresh when they're hot as can be with as much in your face vanilla as possible.
  • BB9K is amazing.
  • 50n40e was very unique, I loved it.
  • Our bottle of T20 was holding up great! T25 was also great. I was expecting to be letdown by T20, have heard some less than good things about how it's aging.
  • De Garde. MOOOOAAAR.
  • Framboos > Hommage. Not even close.
  • West Ashley basically was designed for me as a citrus whore. I need to get one.
  • SHBRL was FANTASTIC. So good, some ******* brought a second bottle so we could all have it again. Ah, life is hard sometimes.
  • The Fou is 2010. My lesson: fresh Fou is best Fou. The 2010 wasn't as apricoty but was still great. I just think not much else compares to fresh Fou, I won't be aging it.
  • LP Framboise was 2002 sticker...unlike Fou, I would have no problem aging LPF or LPK, this bottle was fantastic.
  • Mamouche is ******* weird (my first time having it).
  • Sneaky highlight: '11 Blushing Monk. Aging like a ******* champ.

Agree with everything Bill said. Except the thing about the 2010 Fou Foune. It was perfect. Jammy apricots with a more pronounced sourness than the fresh bottles we drank the next night at Parker Pie. I blame the cold
you had on the first night ;)

Thoughts:

  • It was interesting how different our two bottles of Mimosa were. The first one was what I was expecting for a 2+ year old citrus saison. The second one was shockingly good.
  • "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. " - Ann. Seriously, it was great. Not as good as it was fresh, sure. But still phenomenal. Right next to CD5 and B5 Flora as the best HF bottles of the weekend.
  • Despite only planning on opening one bottle of SHBRL this weekend, it turns out that even two bottles isn't enough. Absolutely fantastic and perhaps my favorite beer of the entire weekend.
  • 2014 Bourbon Vanilla Dark Lord was stupid good.
  • So was Apple Brandy Mexican Cake. I was expecting to be let down by the hype machine, but it's seriously an excellent beer.

Like fletch said, we had some great beers and a great time drinking them. Fletcher, Bill, Scott and JR are super generous folks to share all their excellent beer with us. Already looking forward to next year....
