BCB?

Not really a tasting, but we had those two at Night of the Great Thirst and they were amazing! I'm glad I still have a bottle of each! :D

Tom, it was great spending the last 3-4 days drinking beer :) I have 350+ SLR photos to edit and trim down and will put them here. You are in 1-2 of them looking fly with that swagga. :)

Did an interesting gueuze-ish blind tasting this weekend with some friends who ranged from well versed in sours to very little sour experience:

10245495_10102629548944663_3766075795405586261_n.jpg

Left to right - Rueuze 3F, Cantillon, Beat, Resurgam, Hansens

Results were surprising - the generally agreed upon favorite was Hansens. It was my favorite and the funkiest of the bunch, followed closely by 3F. Not sure if this is particularly noteworthy, but those two also had the most head as you can see in the photo above. Cantillon was a little sweeter and mellower than the rest, with the exception of Rueuze which was also the least funky. In fact Resurgam tasted similar to Rueuze, but with more funk. Beat was in the middle of the pack as well, and also a lot lighter in color than the rest. 3F had a distinct twang that I described as "herbal", but someone else described as nutty. It was a very sharp flavor that was very appealing to me.

Note to self - Get more Hansens gueuze.

Very interesting. Been meaning to do a similar blind tasting soon - thanks for sharing the results!

Yeah, me and the other dude that has had a good number of sours were very surprised. I was certain that Hanssens (can't remember how the hell to spell it) was Cantillon. We refilled after the reveal and everything was legit.

Highlights? Just curious.

Hommage was definitely my favorite of the bunch, super fresh fruit and nice funk, purely awesome. Double Barrel Mohawk Blizzard Porter was the surprise for me, I thought that was really nice and had great roast and chocolate tones. Lovibonds Dark Reserve 3 was the disappointment on the night, definite green apple notes, maybe acetaldehyde? Either way, fantastic tasting, thanks again HenrikO!

Had a Bourbon County variant tasting with Shellac44 and drbenzo last night.

For me, Vanilla > Bramble > Proprietors > Coffee > Backyard Rye > Cherry Rye > Rare. Whoever says that the vanilla is all gone, you're completely wrong. Bramble was jammy goodness. Proprietor's was surprisingly good, considering I don't like coconut all that much. Coffee is always good, Backyard was slightly better than Cherry Rye, and Rare was honestly a slight let down. Seemed a bit oxidised and thinner than every other variant. Possible that we had a bad bottle/incorrectly stored bottle; would love to try it again (but that's not likely going to happen haha).

Also had some other beers after we went through the Bourbon County stouts:

Favourites of the night included Vanilla, Bramble, Great, Proprietor's, and The K13. Vietnamese Speedway was awesome too, as was most everything else. Great beer, great company, great time.

The Armand & Tommy had an amazing funk as well. It was definitely a treat. Thank you HenrikO! I hope you enjoy our shipment as much as we enjoyed yours!

Oh crap. They had the Dark Reserve on tap at the brewery about a year and a half ago and I really liked it so I bought four bottles. Then we moved, everything got packed up, I forgot about it and haven't tried it since. Sounds like I should crack open my remaining bottles sooner rather than later and hope for the best.

Otherwise glad you liked the rest of the stuff! The new Hommage is indeed excellent, and St Lam/Vig are always good.

Well, that looks awesome. See you at CBC!

****, before Michigan gets pissed i didn't give any thoughts on these bottles:

Almost any lambic pre 1990 was pretty bad, amber / cream ale comes to mind with a lot of sweetness. These were also some mass-producers so some of them were not made traditionally.

The exception to this was Gueuze Brouwerij De Koninck (pre-1970) in an old style champagne glass. A lot of acetone but incredibly drinkable, full of awesome carbonation even with the cork falling apart as we took it out of the bottle:

The '99 3F gueuze was amazing, Bierpallieters was pretty amazing and Fantome at the source and spending 2 hours talking to danyP was an awesome experience. He's one of the most friendly guys in the beer world!

The Yves Paneel Gueuze(s) were very well done! I preferred the non-angel label personally. Boon Oude Kriek was surprisingly great and I want more of it

At DHVL, we had Lindeman's Loerik, old Orval and a few other goodies. Awesome place and the food was simply incredible.

Highlight best tasting beer so far the regular old 3F Oude Gueuze. It's amazing how much better this stuff tastes when you're surrounded by new friends, in the belgian countryside with the sun beating down on you. One of my favorite moments. Get the lambic washed cheese @ 3F so awesome.

I feel like I've had so many American beers here in belgium. The OWA Japanese Lambics were pretty bad. 17 Euro a 75CL bottle is very expensive by belgian standards. Was not impressed and unfortunately already bought a 37.5CL each to take home. Oh well.

The Pannepot vertical was really interesting. R and GR still tasting amazing. The 2013 was way too sweet, 2012 was infected and 2010/2011 were equally as amazing. 2009 and earlier was pretty much falling off with oxidation and off-flavors. Looks like pannepot is best 24-48 months nothing more.

enjoying a Cantillon Rose before bed. Belgium fun continues

great time so far. still another 6 days of drinking!

I'm genuinely curious how the Turtleback Ridge blend was.

Where are the tasting notes and rankings?
Rankings:
  1. BLiS Tahitian Vanilla - at the risk of sounding like an idiot, this thing was incredibly complex. It almost has a fruity and floral character to it. The vanilla comes through and makes it shine!
  2. Homemade - Nice and light with a good smoky maple flavor. The sap for this was reduced down over a maple wood burning fire in an old copper pot. I'm sad that this was the last of my last bottle
  3. BLiS Bourbon Barrel - HUGE and sweet. A total caramel and brown sugar bomb. It has a decent amount of oak and char to it, but it's too overpowering on it's own. I would recommend using this as a desert topping instead of a breakfast topping
  4. Kirkland - Thick and cloyingly sweet. Taste of artificial maple flavor and some off-putting smoke.
  5. Aunt Jemima - Drain pour.
