Little get together to eat Carnitas Snack Shack at Toronado SD on Tuesday turned into this with ehammond1 amk spicecowboy SocalKicks LSUPT JonathanAmes VaTechHopHead grandmeaulnes Sage

Thanks to all that came! Was such a blast and hope we can do it again soon! Literally every beer was incredible, not one disappointed.

CCB Good Morning Mekong - best coffee porter I've had. Dat civet richness and fudge. Awesome
Upland Strawberry Lambic - Dat strawberry, very very tasty.
Jester King La Vie en Rose - Atrial Lite in the best way possible and that might not be doing it justice.
New Glarus VSB!!! - nothing that needs to be said here, this is great. Blackberry jam. You da man LSUPT
De Garde The Archer - delicious, not the best description but kinda like Supplication on steroids with a fuzzier complex mouthfeel.
De Garde Saison Desay #1 - botanical, citrusy, amazing
Olde Hickory Event Horizon - best bottle of this I've had yet. dat mouthfeel doe.
Pelican Mother of all Storms - cut out of pic on accident :( first time having this one! caramel & toffee
Firestone PNC - I mean come on, it's Toronado Tuesday. Also one shy of being Untappd #1 check in
Cantillon Mamouche - this was awesome, got pickle on the nose too
Funky Buddha Maple Bacon Coffee Porter - so mapley mmmmmm. best "other" porter I've had
Gooby Pls - Personal ghost whale of mine. #LACondoLambic. Really delicious and super complex - citrus, not too much kiwi if at all, funk, plastic, some 'Tome phenols, hint of La Brea tar pit. would bang again/10
Beachwood Pole Position - another killer Beachwood IPA
750ml Temptation - Batch 004? 2009? - Really tasty beer but can't remember specifics too well. Wasn't too sour from what I remember but had nice fruit flavors - very opposed to how bright it is fresh. Don't think I got much funk but I'm sure other can chim in if I'm off.

Met up with DmouthCaliBrewz and a few other guys from NYC last night in NH. Small tasting, the French Oak Bois, Mocha Wednesday and Rum Lawson's Fayston totally stole the show.

Persica 2013 butter update: Blend 1 tasting pretty damn good...slight popcorn finish. Blend 2 is buttery hell. I don't think we finished the bottle.

Didn't see that coming. Any additional notes on this one?

Mohogony pour. Murky poo brown. Nose is wonderful. Figs, prunes, berries. The oak spice is huge. Wow. The most spicy, tannic overwhelming amazing tongue coating version of bois. It’s so boozy in the best ways. Wow.

I think most of all, Brandy is quite sweet, Rye quite spicy and new american oak was total ****. Bourbon is awesome and I would say the order for me is

Brandy>French Oak>Rye>Bourbon>American Oak

that's my opinion. the french oak just had a lot of tannins and fruits made this pretty amazing. the mouthfeel was also awesome.

-------

I've revisited bourbon, american oak, Brandy & now french oak in the last 2 months all from my basement sitting side-by side @ 55F. palates differ, I'm drunk right now, **** the haters.

Damnit I only have like 6 daybreaks in the cellar, why didn't we drink that?

What were some of the highlights and/or disappointments?

Damnit I only have like 6 daybreaks in the cellar, why didn't we drink that?
Probably because I was kinda done by the last beer of the night
Though there was almost 1.5 liters of ~10% abv beer per person.

PeelBacks
Think among the MC's we put it at 1, 3, 2
Genealogy was great; I had very little of the BoT but it seemed alright
Damon b1 was not doing too well, Damon b2 was good, and port Damon was alright
Beyond didn't seem as maple-y as when I had it fresher but maybe that's just my imagination

Neither you or Jon drank much of the BoT. I hate wasting so I drank the rest of the bottle. Feeling it this morning though.

The stout heavy 1/3 (or so) of the tasting yesterday with kcbaby, Respirologist, ShowerHeady, and a bunch of other people who's handles I don't know or aren't on TB

mmmm dat hazelnut wax

But srs, the older Darkness's were reminiscent of HotD Adam with the tobacco, leather, and dried dark fruit

stand outs? highlights? what wasn't that great etc etc

There were 11 people and I suggested doing Darkness rankings several times, e.g. what was the top 1-3 for each person, but they were weren't cooperative. Doing the Bruery horizontal 10 minutes before the Darkness vertical may have had something to do with that though.

Personally I liked Darkness '13 the best - fresher the better. From what I remember, here's how many people thought which year was #1:
2009 - 2
2010 - 3
2011 - 1
2012 - 3
2013 - 2

As for the Bruery beers, MW ended up being dead last due to a solid green pepper presence in the nose. GM and CR were ranked the highest, so the Olympic stand is: (didn't tally actual number of votes)
Gold - GM
Silver - CR
Bronze - BT

I hope that particular bottle of MW was an anomaly though as it could have been ranked 2 or 3 otherwise

Combined tastings from fri night and Saturday night, celebrating the birth of my first child!
Thanks to ShawDeuce22 Jon HevvyMetalHippie Ataraxia and JCastle for helping me celebrate the occasion!

VXaLir9.jpg

Highlights for me were:
Ann (holding up surprisingly well)
Flora Satsuma (huge citrus)
Beyond good and evil (my new favorite HF beer)
Art (forgot how good this beer is)

Disappointments:
2013 bourbon Damon (maybe just a bad bottle, but not smooth at all and not nearly as good as it was fresh)
B2 Norma (b1 and b3 were great, b2 not so much

GM ruled the land by far. I also did a blend of all 4 which wasn't bad but the MW ended up over powering other flavors in the front of the tounge but the after tasted allow subtle other flavors to come out.

Had a little cellar clearing / tasting last night with kump and some other friends. Arranged bottles in rough L-R order of personal preference:

GuRK2S1.jpg

rkOe9hR.jpg

L-R:
Fremont Sour Weisse - a strong DMS tomato soup smell ruined this one sadly
De Garde Vin Lee
Evil Twin Even More Jesus
- an even bigger gusher than the vin lee
Fremont Midnight Rider - didn't pick up on any of the vanilla or coconut, but lots of coffee
Deschutes Black Butte XXV
Upright Four Play
- batch 1, a little past it's prime - very faint aftertaste of cheese, described as "memories of leerdammer" by one - but everything else held up. and what a label
Porterhouse Devil's HalfAcre - BA Black IPA from Ireland?! very unexpected and tasty
Bellwoods Catherine Wheel
Anchorage / Crooked Stave Between the Staves -
surprisingly brett free! tasty but maybe worth sitting on a while longer if you have one
3F Intense Red
Ale Apothecary El Cuatro
New Glarus Raspberry Tart -
such a great way to break up a sour-heavy tasting. thanks for bringing this kump!

And (my) top 3:
Bronze: Upright Fantasia '14 - an absolute revelation versus the '13 that I had last year, which was admittedly less fresh when we opened it. Incredible. Thanks for the bottle Shmeal!
Silver - Upright Sole Composition Provision - phenomenal. sour, complex, and surprisingly balanced! Drank incredibly for the age, would highly recommend.
Gold - BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon Chien 2011 - amazing. a common theme with the descriptions but again - sour, super complex, utterly delicious, and my favourite of the night. Cannot fathom why this is still on shelves in Portland, and will do my part to rectify it if I see it again.
