I became curious about something that came up in a conversation recently. My wife said, "I'm sorry the Lions are losing." I didn't really think about it and said, "Huh, it's not really worth mentioning," and it actually wasn't.
Detroit has had plenty of bright spots (not football) in the not-too-distant past. It's kind of fun but lasts, what? About five minutes? Voting for some rich guys whose loyalty is to whomever pays them the most? I'm not buying.
So as not to get off track, I like the game of football a lot and will continue to watch.
So I was wondering, why do people who live in a particular zip code get so fired up and invested when they don't have anything to do with the success or failure of a team?
The players are definitely not loyal--painfully not loyal, verbally not loyal--they'll state, over and over, that it's a business.
I can see college loyalty, to a slight degree, and high school loyalty to a greater one.
But pro sports?
It's sham-worthy. These guys will jet at the mere whiff of a dollar.
So where's the connection?
