Hey all. Just started on a whim making mead and beer this year. I made my first 5 gallons of red ale and I'm on my second gallon of mead.

origin story - I was driving through a town in SC that was nothing but peach groves and stopped at a farm stand. They had peach blossom honey and I thought to myself "I bet that would make delicious mead" so I bought 4 twelve ounce bottles of it along with some peaches and ordered a mead kit off Amazon. I threw it all together and two months later surprised everyone (especially myself) when I tried it and not only did I not die, it was delicious.

I wanted to make another so I went to a local brewing supplies store for more "professional" equipment and advice because I did SO many things wrong. I also thought maybe trying a gallon of beer too. The slick salesman managed to con me into brewing 5 gallons of beer and sold me all the stuff to do it. The beer also did not kill me and tasted delicious even though I screwed a lot of the steps up. (Is it just me or does a beer recipe look like 12th grade AP chemistry homework?) Anyway, I've actually crept on a lot of posts here during my research phase and decided to sign up for an account. I'm not a very prolific messageboard poster but I thought this might be a good place to get some questions answered.

Regards,
John

Welcome! I can’t blame that “slick salesman”, the extra 4 gallons is a welcome payoff for nearly the same effort as a single gallon.
