Tried a kit from Muntons of RIS. Followed instructions, but the yeast doesn't seem to be doing anything after 6 hours? No sugar called for in the instructions printed on the box. Any ideas what's going on. Other RIS recipes don't seem to call for sugar. HELP, is my yeast a dud or did they leave sugar off their list? The airlock is fine, but no action.

The kit had extract in it???? That would be the syrup (or dried powder). That is the sugar the yeast will convert to alcohol.

6 hours is not long. I don't expect any activity in that time. In fact I get concerned if I do see activity in that time, as the yeast hasn't had enough time to reproduce. I usually see activity between 8 and 14 hours. At 24 hours I might start worrying. Some folks will tell you wait 3 days before taking any action.

Refer to the sticky posts... Can take up to a few days to show signs of fermentation. Relax :)

The yeast kicked in overnight and is doing nicely! Thanks for the advice!
