No batch size on recipes, what to do?

Hey guys,
I just bought the ebook "Brew Your Own Beer - 640 Thirst Quenching Beer Recipes" and i can't seem to find any batch sizes at all. I looked at the amount of malt used, hoping they might all be 5 gallon recipes, but the pounds of malt used varies from under 5 to more than 20 per batch of All-grain.
I understand that I can calculate the water used for mashing, but I usually top off with water after boiling, but I have no final volume in these recipes..

Am I mistaken, or is this a little strange?

this is an example from the ebook.

Batch #62 Brain Wipe

Category Belgian Ale
Recipe Type All Grain

Fermentables
10 lbs Dewolf and Cosyn pilsner malt
1 lb. Briess 2-row malt
1.5 lbs. Corn sugar
2 lbs Laglaander Extra pale dry malt extract

Other
1.5 oz. Tettenager (4.4%) 60 min.
0.5 oz. Tettenager (4.4%) 5 min.

Yeast Wyeast White beer yeast
Procedure Mashed malts with step infusion mash, 30 min. 122 F., 75 min. 150 F., 10 min. 168 F. Boil thirty minutes. Add corn sugar, malt extract, 1st hop addition. Boil 55 minutes. Add 2nd hop addition. Cool and pitch yeast (2 liter starter). Ferment 65-70 until completion
 
It's a bit annoying, but I've seen that before. It looks to be 5-5.5 gallons to me, based on the grain bill. Maybe someone else with Beersmith can confirm?

Pretty sure they're 5 gallons. I skimmed "Clone Brews" and that's pretty much the right grain weight range. 5 lbs seems a little light, but some of the high gravity beers call for more than 20 pounds. Anyhow, "Clone Brews" only has 5 gallon recipes.

Thanks, I really wasn't planning on brewing that exact recipe, it was just an example, but if that seems like 5-5,5, then a recipe with more than 20 lbs malt must be more.. I just don't understand it. Is there anyway to calculate the batch size from the amount of ingredients?

Sorry, i didn't read your last comment. So you're saying that they're all 5 gallon recipes?
 
I think that is a 10gallon recipe(4.2%ABV) or a really strong 5 gallon batch (8.4%ABV) :D not sure if that helps you at all but I just threw the ingredients into beer alchemy then adjusted my volumes accordingly. You could probably use an online recipe calculator/formulation to do the same thing with your other recipes.

Ditto.

A 5 gallon Barleywine could have 20+ lbs of grain.

Given the name of this beer it could be a 5 gallon recipe especially with 1.5 pounds of sugar to up the ABV and dry it out. You can use this same recipe and make it 6 gallons, rename it Brain Confusion.

This link to Palmers book may help to work the recipe in reverse to estimate the FG to end with. I'm not an all grainer, but it should work. to me it looks like a 5 to 5.5 gallon recipe.

I think that you would need to know the expected OG to be able to determine the batch size. I found the same recipe searching the web and it was listed as a 5 gallon batch.

I just went through some more recipes in the book and found this one where it says "sparge to make 11 gallons". Obviously that's not a 5 gallon recipe :(

Category Barleywine

1 lbs roasted lager malt

1 oz Goldings leaf hops (5.6% alpha)
1 oz Hallertauer
.5 oz Hallertauer
.5 oz Hallertauer

2 tsp gypsum
.75 tsp Irish moss in last 10 minutes of boil

Yeast Whitbread ale yeast
Procedure 1 hour 15 minute protein rest at 132 --- 115F. Mash at 152F with 1/2 ounce amylase enzyme for 2--1/2 hours. Mash out at 165--172. Sparge with 168 water to make 11 gallons. Boil, adding hops as noted. Cool and pitch yeast. Rack after 1 week, bottle a week later priming with corn sugar.

Just split the ingredients in half if you only want a 5 gallon batch. That is a lot of fermentables but it is a barleywine in description so I could see that.

Thanks for the replies, but I'm not looking to brew that specific batch, I was merely curious about the book as a whole, and if anyone else have heard of it/tried it, and was in the same position i am in now?

It seems to me that there are both 5 gallon and higher batch size recipes in there, which sucks because I'll have to figure out the batch size for each individual recipe, and probably adjust it to 5 gallons if it's higher.
 
Yeah I could see that being moldy annoying. You would think they would have better notation in brewing recipes but I have seen more than a few that leave a bit too much up for interpretation.

As an ebook (not regulated as well as professionally-printed material) with that many recipes, I suspect it was collected from various sources without much vetting from the "author", whose primary effort was probably googling recipes and copying and pasting them into his book. If that's the case, there's probably not a great deal of consistency in the volumes of the recipes. You'll have to either search for alternate sources of the recipes to confirm batch size, or guess at the original intent by estimating ABV.

Yeah I know, I didn't mean to. At first I accidentally started one in "announcements and feedback", and figured I probably wasn't in the right Forum, so I found one more suitable for this topic. Today is my first day here, and I've never been in a forum before so it will probably take a little time getting used to :)
 
Most of the recipes I look at are five gallons.
But you need to qualify early on U.S. or Imperial gallons !
If the temps are Fahrenheit and weights pounds and ounces it's probably U.S. Gals
