Greetings from Chicago west 'burbs!! Joined for the Hydra giveaway, staying for the beer! 
Brewed my first batch (partial mash, DME) in about 15 years a couple weeks ago, bottling this weekend pending SG readings. Used my local HBS's American pale ale kit, plus an added dryhop of 1 oz Centennial pellets for my 2nd stage. OG reading came up really short (1.042, should have been 1.055) but I'm sure I'll be able to choke it down anyway.
I've won awards in a couple of homebrew competitions MANY years ago, 1st place in category for a California common which is my fave brew I ever made, and then 3rd place in category for a smoked apple ale which turned out really well for just making it up as I went along! LOL That one was amazing about a year later, of course just in time to polish off the last bottle.
